How to build N3 flashcards from your own course material

Ready-made Japanese flashcards N3 decks are handy, but they rarely match the chapters, grammar points and vocab lists your class actually covers. Uploading those pages gives you a set that fits your course instead.

  • Upload the textbook chapter or vocab list your class follows
  • Keep grammar cards to one pattern each, with an example sentence
  • Review hard cards more often than the ones you already know
  • Check AI-generated cards against your material before relying on them
Example JLPT N3 grammar flashcards
What does 〜ようになる express?A change over time in ability or habit, such as 日本語が話せるようになった, meaning I came to be able to speak Japanese.
What does 〜わけだ mean? That explains why, or no wonder, showing the speaker understands the reason behind something.
What nuance does 〜てしまう add?Completion or regret, so 忘れてしまった means I ended up forgetting it, with a sense of regret.
What does 気が付く (きがつく) mean?To notice or become aware of something, such as noticing a mistake in a sentence.
What does 〜ばかり mean after a noun?Only or nothing but, so 日本語ばかり勉強している means I only study Japanese.

Built from your material

Upload PDFs, DOCX files, PPTX slides, plain notes or photos of textbook pages, and get cards that follow your chapters.

Spaced repetition

Cards return at intervals based on how well you remember them, so grammar patterns and kanji stay in memory longer.

Export when you need it

Study in the browser on the Free plan, or export to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV on a paid plan.

How it works

Upload your pages

Add a textbook chapter, a vocab list, lecture slides or photos of pages. Text in photos is read with recognition.

Generate and check

Choose flashcards and review the cards against your course material before you start studying.

Study on a schedule

Review daily in the browser, and keep returning to the cards you find hardest.

N3 grammar is mostly about patterns and nuance, so the best cards put the pattern and an example sentence on the front and the meaning and usage notes on the back. Kanji and vocabulary work well as short recall cards that come back on a spaced schedule.

If you use Anki or another app for review, paid plans let you export your set, so your cards can live where you already study.

Frequently asked questions

How many N3 words should I learn each week?

There is no single right number, but a short daily set usually works better than one large batch on the weekend. Spaced repetition then brings each card back just before you would be likely to forget it.

What is the best way to study N3 grammar with flashcards?

Put the pattern and a short example sentence on the front, and the meaning and usage notes on the back. Review each card for meaning first, then read the example sentence aloud.

Can I export my N3 flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included on the Plus plan, which also covers PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The Free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Does DeckOwl have a free plan?

Yes. The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start.
