Why generate your own printable Japanese flashcards

Most ready-made sets of Japanese flashcards to print cover general vocabulary, not the kana chart, chapter vocabulary or kanji list your class actually uses. Generating cards from your own material keeps the printout matched to what you need to memorize.

  • Kana charts taken from your own textbook or handout
  • Kanji with readings and meanings from your lesson slides
  • Vocabulary lists you can review before a quiz
  • Cards that repeat on a schedule, so weak items come back sooner
Example Japanese flashcards for beginner kana and kanji

Built from your material

Upload PDFs, PPTX slides, DOCX files, plain notes or photos of pages, and the cards come from what you actually studied.

Spaced repetition

Cards return on a schedule, so the kana and kanji you keep missing get more practice than the ones you already know.

Printable PDF export

PDF export is included in Plus, so you can print a finished card set for class without retyping anything.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slide deck, set of notes or a photo of a textbook page.

Generate the cards

Review the AI flashcards and remove any that do not match your course.

Study or print

Keep studying in the browser, or on Plus export a PDF and print it.

Start with the source you already have: a unit handout, a lecture slide deck, or a photo of the hiragana chart in your notebook. DeckOwl reads the text from each file and turns it into cards you can review in the browser or print as a PDF on Plus.

Frequently asked questions

How many Japanese flashcards should I make per study session?

A set of about 15 to 25 new cards per session is easier to keep up with than one long block. Keep reviewing older cards so new material does not crowd them out.

Should I learn hiragana before kanji?

Most beginner courses start with hiragana and katakana because kanji words are read using kana. Learn the kana first, then add kanji from the lessons you are studying.

Can I print my flashcards for free?

The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, but it does not include exports. PDF export is part of Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start without a credit card, and students get 40% off with a school email.
