Why build Japanese verb flashcards from your own material

A printable list of Japanese verbs is a common starting point, but it rarely matches the chapter your class is on. DeckOwl reads your own material and turns it into Japanese verb flashcards you can review with spaced repetition, so the verbs you need show up when you need them.

  • Cards keep the dictionary form, meaning and conjugation pattern together.
  • Verbs from your own chapters appear first, not a generic list.
  • Review schedules adjust to the verbs you find difficult.
  • Free plan includes 3 generations per month with browser study.
Example Japanese verb flashcards
What does 食べる (taberu) mean?To eat. It is a ru-verb, so its polite form is 食べます (tabemasu).
What is the past tense of 行く (iku)?行った (itta). 行く is a u-verb with an irregular past tense.
What is the te-form of 書く (kaku)?書いて (kaite). For u-verbs ending in く, drop く and add いて.
What is the polite negative of する (suru)?しません (shimasen). する is irregular, so memorize its forms separately.
What is the te-form of 見る (miru)?見て (mite). Ru-verbs drop る and add て.

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or image. Photos of pages are read with text recognition.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl pulls out verbs, meanings and conjugation patterns and turns them into question and answer cards.

Review on a schedule

Study each day, and let spaced repetition decide which verbs need another pass.

Upload a PDF of your textbook chapter, a slide deck, typed notes or a photo of the board. Text recognition handles photographed pages, and you can review the cards in the browser on the free plan.

Plus at $99.90/year or $9.99/month adds unlimited generations and export to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV, which helps if you already keep a deck for daily review.

Frequently asked questions

How should I group Japanese verbs on flashcards?

Group verbs by conjugation pattern, such as ru-verbs, u-verbs and the irregular verbs suru and kuru. Small sets are easier to review than long lists, so split a chapter into several decks.

Should I memorize dictionary form or polite forms first?

Start with the dictionary form and its meaning, then add the polite ます form and the te-form once the basics stick. Cards that include a short example sentence help you remember how the verb is used.

Does the free plan let me export my flashcards?

No. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, while exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV are part of Plus and Pro.

Can DeckOwl make cards from a photo of a verb table?

Yes. Images are read with text recognition, so you can photograph a verb table or handout and generate flashcards from it.
