Why a generic list falls short for future forms

Japanese has no separate future tense like English, so a Japanese future flash card list usually mixes several expressions such as 〜つもり, 〜予定, 〜でしょう, 〜ようと思う and 〜ようにします. Each one carries a different nuance of intention, plan or guess.

  • Non-past verbs such as 行く can describe future events when context or time words make the meaning clear.
  • 〜つもりです expresses a firm intention, while 〜予定です refers to an arranged plan.
  • 〜でしょう signals a guess about what will probably happen.
  • Pair each card with an example sentence so the pattern stays tied to its meaning.
Example Japanese future expressions flashcards
〜つもりですIntend to do. 明日は勉強するつもりです。 (I intend to study tomorrow.)
〜予定ですScheduled to do. 来週、東京へ行く予定です。 (I am scheduled to go to Tokyo next week.)
〜でしょうProbably will. 明日は雨が降るでしょう。 (It will probably rain tomorrow.)
〜ようと思いますBe thinking of doing. 来年、日本語を勉強しようと思います。 (I am thinking of studying Japanese next year.)
〜ようにしますWill make sure to do. 毎日、単語を覚えるようにします。 (I will make sure to memorize vocabulary every day.)

Frequently asked questions

How many future expressions should I learn at once?

Start with three to five patterns, such as 〜つもりです, 〜予定です and 〜でしょう, and review them for a few days before adding more. Mixing too many new forms at once makes them harder to tell apart.

Does Japanese have a future tense?

Not a separate grammatical tense. The non-past form often describes future events, and time words like 明日 or 来週 make the timing clear, while expressions such as 〜つもりです add intention or plans.

Can I export these flashcards?
