Custom Japanese months flashcards beat a generic printout

Many printable charts list the twelve months once and move on, while your class may use its own textbook or teacher handout. DeckOwl lets you build Japanese months flashcards from the exact pages you were assigned, whether that is a PDF, a slide deck or a photo of your notebook.

  • Upload a PDF, slide deck, DOCX or a photo of handwritten vocabulary.
  • Cards show the kanji month on one side and the hiragana reading on the other.
  • Spaced repetition schedules reviews around the months you forget.
  • Free plan studies in the browser; Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.
Example Japanese months flashcards
1月 (January): how is it read?いちがつ (ichigatsu). Ichi is the standard reading of 1 in month names.
3月 (March): how is it read?さんがつ (sangatsu). The reading uses san for 3, the same as in counting.
4月 (April): how is it read?しがつ (shigatsu). Shi is the reading used for 4 in this month name, so it is an exception to the usual pattern.
7月 (July): how is it read?しちがつ (shichigatsu). Shichi is the usual reading of 7 here, while nana is rarely used.
12月 (December): how is it read?じゅうにがつ (jūnigatsu). Jūni means twelve, followed by gatsu for month.

Works from your material

Upload a PDF, slide deck, DOCX, text notes or a photo of your notebook. Text recognition reads the handwriting on the page.

Kanji and reading cards

Generate cards that show 3月 on one side and さんがつ (sangatsu) on the other, so you practice both recognition and pronunciation.

Spaced repetition

Reviews come back sooner for the months you miss, so the irregular readings stick without rereading the whole list.

How it works

Upload your pages

Add the vocabulary sheet, lecture slides or a photo of your notes. No credit card is needed to start.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl pulls out the month names and readings and writes a front and back for each card.

Review on schedule

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki or CSV on Plus when you want to take the deck elsewhere.

Each month has a number with 月, such as 3月, and a spoken reading, such as さんがつ. Cards that test both directions help you recognize the kanji form and say the reading aloud. The irregular months, like 4月 (しがつ) and 7月 (しちがつ), deserve extra reviews.

Spaced repetition then brings back the cards you miss more often, so the list gets shorter as you learn it. Once the twelve feel automatic, you can add days of the month or seasonal vocabulary from the same source.

Frequently asked questions

How do you read the Japanese month names?

Most months add -gatsu to a number, so 1月 is いちがつ (ichigatsu) and 3月 is さんがつ (sangatsu). Exceptions include 4月 (しがつ, shigatsu), 7月 (しちがつ, shichigatsu) and 9月 (くがつ, kugatsu).

How many flashcards should I make for Japanese months?

Twelve month cards with both the kanji and the reading are enough for a first pass. Add days of the month or related vocabulary once the twelve feel automatic.

Is DeckOwl free to use?

Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser with no exports. Plus adds unlimited generations and PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export for $39/year or $7.99/month.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No credit card is needed to start. Students with a school email get 40% off paid plans.
