Why build your own particle flashcards

Particles are where many Japanese learners stall, and japanese particles flashcards are a fast way to drill them. Ready-made decks are a fine starting point, but they use generic examples that may not match your course.

  • Pair each particle with a short example sentence on the back of the card.
  • Make separate cards for contrasts such as は and が, or に and へ.
  • Review new particle cards daily and let missed ones return sooner.
  • Use a photo of your grammar notes if the source is handwritten or scanned.
Example Japanese particles flashcards for beginners
What does は mark in 私は学生です?The topic marker. It tells you what the sentence is about, here I as the topic.
What does を mark in 水を飲みます?The direct object of the action, meaning to drink water.
How do に and で differ for location?に marks where something exists, as in 部屋にいます. で marks where an action happens, as in 図書館で勉強します.
What does へ mark with 行きます?Direction toward a destination, as in 学校へ行きます, to go to school. に can also mark this destination.
What does の mark in 私の本?Possession or a noun-to-noun link, meaning my book.

Frequently asked questions

How many particle flashcards should I make at once?

Start with 10 to 20 cards on one particle group, such as the topic markers は and が. Add more once you can answer them without hesitation.

What is the hardest part of Japanese particles to learn?

Most learners struggle with は versus が, since both can mark a topic but differ in emphasis and contrast. Practice with sentences where changing the particle changes the meaning.

Can I export particle flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included in the Plus plan at $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No, you can start on the free plan without a credit card, which includes 3 generations per month. Students with a school email get 40% off paid plans.
