Build your sentence deck from your own material

Sentence practice is where many learners start to read and speak Japanese instead of memorizing isolated words, and Japanese sentence flashcards make that practice repeatable. The best decks come from material you are already studying, such as the example sentences in your textbook or the phrases your teacher wrote on the board.

  • Cards built from the sentences in your own lesson material
  • Spaced repetition so weak sentences come back sooner
  • Photos of handouts and textbook pages can be used as input
  • Export to Anki, CSV, PDF or DOCX on Plus
Example Japanese sentence flashcards for beginners
Translate: I drink water every morning.Mainichi asa mizu o nomimasu. The particle o marks water as the object of the verb nomu, to drink.
Translate: This book is interesting.Kono hon wa omoshiroi desu. The particle wa marks the topic, and desu makes the statement polite.
Translate: Please give me one more chance.Mou ichido chansu o kudasai. Kudasai makes the request polite, and o marks what you are asking for.
Translate: I went to Osaka last year.Kyonen Osaka ni ikimashita. The particle ni marks the destination of movement with verbs like iku, to go.
Translate: Do you like sushi?Sushi ga suki desu ka. The adjective-like word suki takes the particle ga, not o, and ka makes it a question.

Review on schedule

Study in the browser on the spaced repetition schedule, and export to Anki on Plus.

DeckOwl reads PDFs, DOCX and PPTX files, plain text and photos of pages, then turns the sentences into flashcards with spaced repetition. You can keep each deck tied to one lesson, so grammar patterns like particles and the desu ending come back while they are still fresh.

Studying in the browser is free on the starter plan, which includes 3 generations per month. Plus adds unlimited generations and export to Anki, so your sentence cards can move into the review app you already use.

Frequently asked questions

How many sentences should go in one deck?

A small deck tied to a single lesson works better than one huge deck. Keeping each sentence focused on one grammar point makes the card easier to test yourself on.

Should the card show the Japanese sentence or the English first?

Practicing both directions helps, since English to Japanese builds production and Japanese to English builds reading. Spaced repetition then schedules whichever direction you are reviewing.

Can I export Japanese sentence cards to Anki?

Yes, the Plus plan includes export to Anki, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start.
