Build vocabulary flashcards from the words you actually need to learn

Vocabulary study works best when the words come from the material you are actually preparing for. A Magoosh-style vocabulary builder flashcards set made from your own lists, reading passages and class notes keeps the focus on those words instead of a generic deck. You upload the source, review the generated definitions and study the cards in the order your memory needs.

  • Upload word lists, reading passages or photos of vocabulary pages
  • Review each generated definition against your source before you study
  • Spaced repetition keeps weaker words on a shorter review cycle
  • Export to Anki or CSV on paid plans to study on other devices

Built from your own words

Upload a PDF, DOCX, slide deck, plain text list or a photo of a vocabulary sheet. The text is read and turned into flashcards that match your material.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner and cards you know come back later, so review time goes to the words you are still learning.

Study in the browser

Start on the free plan with no credit card. Paid plans add export to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV for studying anywhere.

How it works

Add your word list

Upload your vocabulary PDF, notes, slides or a photo of a list. Plain text works too.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl writes a front and back for each term so you can check the definitions before studying.

Review on a schedule

Study in the browser and let spaced repetition bring back the words that need more practice.

Spaced repetition is what turns a long list into a lasting vocabulary. Each word is shown again just before you would be likely to forget it, so a term you missed yesterday comes back today and a term you know well appears less often. Short daily sessions of a few minutes usually beat one long cram before a test.

If your word list changes from week to week, generate a new set each time instead of rebuilding cards by hand. Check the definitions against your textbook or the source passage, since a card is only as accurate as the text it came from.

Frequently asked questions

How many vocabulary flashcards should I make for a test?

Start with the words from one reading passage or one week of your list, which is usually 20 to 40 terms. Add more once you can recall most of the current set without looking at the back.

Is it better to learn vocabulary words in context or as isolated definitions?

Learn both. A definition card helps you recognize the meaning, and a sentence from a passage shows how the word is used and which tone it carries. You can paste example sentences into your notes so the generator includes them.

Does DeckOwl work with Magoosh vocabulary lists?

DeckOwl does not connect to Magoosh. You upload the word list or notes as a PDF, document, slide deck, text file or image, and DeckOwl builds flashcards from that material.

Can I export my vocabulary flashcards?

The free plan lets you study flashcards in the browser. PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export are included in the Plus plan at $39 per year or $7.99 per month, and students can get 40% off with a school email.
