Making number flashcards from your own material

Making number flashcards by hand means copying every term twice, once from the textbook and again onto a card, and that time usually goes to layout instead of recall. DeckOwl reads your PDF, slides, DOCX or photos of a page and proposes question-and-answer cards you can edit before you study.

  • Start with one chapter or topic so the deck stays focused.
  • Write the front as a question, such as "What is the place value of 7 in 4,702?"
  • Include the reason in the back when a rule has an exception.
  • Review the deck daily for a few minutes rather than once in a long session.
Example number flashcards for place value and prime numbers
What is a prime number?A whole number greater than 1 with exactly two factors, 1 and itself. Numbers like 2, 3, 5 and 7 qualify, but 9 does not because 3 divides it.
Write 3,052 in words.Three thousand fifty-two. Read the thousands group first, then the hundreds, tens and ones, with no word for zero when it is a placeholder.
What is the place value of 7 in 4,702?Hundreds, because the 7 is in the hundreds position, so it stands for 7 × 100 = 700.
What is the Roman numeral for 40?XL. X is 10 and L is 50, so a smaller numeral before a larger one is subtracted, giving 50 minus 10.
What is an even number? An integer divisible by 2 with no remainder. Its last digit is always 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.

Reads your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain notes, or photos of pages. Text in images is read with text recognition.

Cards with one fact each

Each card tests a single number rule or term, so you can answer quickly and see exactly where you are weak.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know move further out, so review time goes to what you forget.

How it works

Upload your material

Add the page, slide deck or notes that cover your number topic. A photo works if you do not have a file.

Review the generated cards

Check each question and answer, edit wording, and remove any card that does not match your course.

Study with spaced repetition

Work through the deck in the browser each day. Free plan includes 3 generations a month, and exports need Plus or Pro.

Good number cards test one fact per side. Put the rule or value on the front, such as a place value question or a prime check, and keep the answer short enough to say out loud before you flip the card. Spaced repetition then brings back the cards you miss more often than the ones you already know.

Frequently asked questions

How many number flashcards should I make for one topic?

Most single topics work well with 20 to 40 cards, enough to cover the key rules and common examples without overwhelming a session. Split larger chapters into smaller decks so each one can be reviewed in about ten minutes.

What number topics work best for flashcards?

Flashcards suit facts you need to recall quickly, such as place value, number properties, prime and composite numbers, Roman numerals, and converting numbers to words. Topics that need multi-step working are better studied with worked examples alongside the cards.

Can I export my number flashcards to Anki or a PDF?

Exports are a paid feature. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, which includes 3 generations per month. Students also get 40 percent off Plus or Pro with a school email.
