Why build your own phonics cards

Teachers and parents often want phonics flashcards a to z that match the exact lesson of the week, not a generic alphabet set. Printed sheets rarely line up with the sounds a program introduces in order, so cards end up either too basic or out of sync.

  • Cards follow the letters and sounds in your own lesson, not a generic list
  • Photos of printed charts are read with text recognition
  • Spaced repetition brings back the sounds a learner keeps missing
  • Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki, and CSV export for printing or other apps
Example phonics flashcards from A to Z
Letter A: what is its most common short sound?/æ/ as in apple, ant, and cat.
Letter C: what sound does it make before a, o, or u?/k/ as in cat, cup, and cot. Before e, i, or y it is usually /s/ as in city.
Digraph SH: what sound do the two letters make together?/sh/ as in ship and fish. Two letters, one sound.
Silent e: what does it do to the vowel before it?It usually makes the vowel say its long name, as in cap becoming cape.
Letter X at the start of a word: what sound is common?/z/ as in xylophone. In most other positions, such as box, it is /ks/.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know fade into longer intervals so review time goes where it is needed.

How it works

Add your phonics lesson

Upload a PDF, slides, notes, or a photo of the chart or worksheet you already use.

Generate A to Z cards

DeckOwl reads the text, including text in photos, and writes flashcards for each letter and sound it finds.

Study and review

Practice in the browser and let spaced repetition bring back the sounds that need more work.

DeckOwl starts from your own material. Upload the lesson plan, the scope and sequence, or a photo of the class chart, and the generator creates cards for the letters and sounds in that material. Quizzes with explanations and mind maps are available for later review.

Free accounts study in the browser with 3 generations per month. Exporting to PDF, DOCX, Anki, or CSV is included on Plus, so you can print a set once you have built it.

Frequently asked questions

What sounds should A to Z phonics flashcards include?

Most consonants have one main sound, while vowels have a short and a long sound, and some letters change with their neighbors. Use your program's scope and sequence as the guide, and upload that chart so the cards match the order you teach.

How many phonics flashcards should a child learn at once?

Many early reading programs introduce a few new letter sounds each week, so a set of 5 to 8 new cards is a practical start. Keep reviewing older cards alongside them so earlier sounds stay fresh.

Can I export the flashcards to print or use in another app?

Free accounts study in the browser without exports. PDF, DOCX, Anki, and CSV export are included on Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan with 3 generations per month, and students get 40% off with a school email.
