Phonics flashcards from your own book

Many teachers and parents want a phonics flashcards book they can actually use, but a printed set covers sounds in a fixed order and may skip the words your child is struggling with right now.

  • Build cards from the exact lesson pattern you are teaching this week.
  • Include sound, spelling and example words on each card.
  • Repeat missed sounds more often with spaced repetition on Plus.
  • Students get 40% off with a school email.
Example phonics flashcards for early readers
What sound does the digraph 'sh' make?/sh/ as in ship, one sound spelled with two letters.
What is a consonant blend? Two or three consonants said in sequence with each sound still heard, like 'st' in stop.
What does the silent final e do in 'cake'?It makes the vowel before it say its long name, so 'a' says /ay/ rather than the short sound in cap.
What is a vowel team? Two vowels together that make one sound, such as 'ai' in rain or 'oa' in boat.
What is an r-controlled vowel?A vowel followed by r that changes its sound, as in 'car', 'her' or 'fork'.

Reads your pages

Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of workbook pages. Images are read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, so tricky sounds like 'ch' versus 'sh' get the practice they need. Included on Plus.

Study in the browser

The free plan includes 3 generations a month and browser study, with no credit card needed to start.

How it works

Add your material

Upload a scanned page, a worksheet PDF or your own lesson notes on the phonics pattern you are teaching.

Review the cards

Check the sound, spelling and example words on each flashcard and trim or edit anything that does not fit.

Study on a schedule

Practice a short session each day and let spaced repetition bring back the cards that need more work.

DeckOwl turns your own phonics material into flashcards. Upload a PDF, a slide deck, typed notes or photos of pages, and the tool creates cards with the sound or letter pattern on the front and the answer on the back.

Plus includes spaced repetition and exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV. The free plan gives you 3 generations a month so you can test the workflow first.

Frequently asked questions

How many phonics flashcards should I make for one lesson?

Most early readers do well with 10 to 15 cards per session, focused on one or two sound patterns such as short vowels or digraphs. Build each deck around the pattern taught that week.

In what order should phonics skills be taught?

Many programs start with letter-sound correspondence and short vowels, then add consonant blends, digraphs like sh and ch, long vowel patterns and r-controlled vowels. Follow the sequence your school or curriculum uses.

Can DeckOwl read a photo of a phonics workbook page?

Yes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so you can upload images of workbook pages and get flashcards from them. Use material you have the right to copy for your own teaching.

Can I export my phonics flashcards to Anki or PDF?

Exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV are part of the Plus plan at $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exporting.
