Why explanations matter more than the answer key

Many MCAT prep sets tell you whether you were right but not why, and the why is where most of the learning happens. DeckOwl reads your own review material and writes MCAT practice questions with explanations from it, so each item ties back to the content you are studying.

  • Multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions from your own notes
  • A written explanation for every answer, correct or not
  • Questions built from the chapters and slides you upload
  • Missed questions can be reviewed with spaced repetition on Plus
Example MCAT general chemistry and biology practice questions
A buffer has equal concentrations of a weak acid and its conjugate base. What is its pH relative to the pKa?The pH equals the pKa, because log of a 1:1 ratio is zero in the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation.
In enzyme kinetics, what does a competitive inhibitor do to Km?It increases Km, because the inhibitor competes with substrate for the active site, so more substrate is needed to reach half Vmax, which stays the same.
In an exothermic reaction at equilibrium, what happens when temperature is increased? The equilibrium shifts toward reactants, because heat acts like a product and the system consumes the added heat.
What structure sets the heart rate by generating the electrical impulse? The sinoatrial node, because its pacemaker cells depolarize spontaneously faster than any other part of the heart.
True or false: the Krebs cycle takes place in the cytoplasm.False. It occurs in the mitochondrial matrix, where the enzymes for acetyl-CoA oxidation are located.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes a written explanation, so you learn why the correct choice works and why the distractors fail.

Built from your own material

Questions come from the textbook chapters, lecture slides or notes you upload, so the practice matches what you are actually studying.

Spaced review of missed questions

Questions you miss can feed into spaced repetition on Plus, so weak points come back before you forget them.

How it works

Upload your review material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or photos of pages. Images are read with text recognition.

Choose the question type

Pick multiple choice, true/false or short answer. Each one is generated with an explanation.

Answer, check and revisit

Work through the set, read the explanation for each item and send the ones you missed back into review.

Explanations help most when they connect a wrong answer to the concept you misunderstood, such as confusing a competitive inhibitor with a noncompetitive one. Reading that reasoning right after each attempt makes the next similar question easier to reason through.

Free accounts can generate a few sets each month and study them in the browser. Plus adds unlimited generations and export to PDF or DOCX, and Pro adds a stronger AI model and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export for school courses.

Frequently asked questions

How should I use explanations when I get an MCAT question wrong?

Read the explanation before moving on, then write one sentence in your own words saying what you misunderstood. Come back to that concept in a few days and try a fresh question on it.

Are practice questions better than rereading for MCAT science?

Retrieving an answer from memory usually builds recall more effectively than rereading, and explanations show you the reasoning you need for passage-based questions. Mixing both works well.

Can I export these questions to Moodle or QTI?

Yes, but only on Pro, which includes QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export. PDF and DOCX export is available on Plus, and the Free plan is study-only in the browser.

Is there a free plan to try it?

Yes. The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and you do not need a credit card to start. Students with a school email get 40 percent off paid plans.
