Why teachers and parents use custom CVC cards

Early readers learn best when the words on their cards match the sounds they are working on. Generic CVC phonics flashcards often mix in vowel teams or silent e words too early, which makes practice confusing. Starting from your own lesson keeps the focus on short vowels like cat, pig, hot, bed and cup.

  • Sort words by short vowel so each set targets one sound
  • Keep sets to about 10 to 20 new words for short sessions
  • Review older sets alongside new ones to lock in earlier sounds
  • Check generated cards against your lesson before the first session
Example CVC phonics flashcards
What is a CVC word?A short word made of consonant, vowel, consonant sounds, such as cat, dog or sun.
Sound out m-o-p. What vowel sound do you hear? The short o sound, as in hot, so the word is mop.
Which vowel sound is in bed?Short e, /ɛ/, as in egg, so bed is a CVC word.
Is sheep a CVC word? No. The ee vowel team makes a long e sound, so sheep does not follow the CVC pattern.
Why is cake not a CVC word? The silent e makes the a long, so cake follows the CVCe pattern instead.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of a phonics worksheet, and the generator pulls out the CVC words and sounds that appear in it.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know move further apart, so short daily sessions keep earlier sounds fresh.

Study in the browser

The free plan runs in any browser on a laptop or tablet, with 3 generations per month and no credit card needed to start.

How it works

Add your word list

Upload the lesson PDF, slide deck, typed list or a photo of the page. Text recognition reads images.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl builds flashcards with the word on one side and the sound or meaning on the other.

Practice a little each day

Spaced repetition schedules reviews so your child sees new CVC words and the older ones they still need.

Once the cards exist, spaced repetition does the scheduling. A child who reads mop correctly once in a session will see it again later, while words like fix or pen that still cause trouble come back more often. Plus adds unlimited generations and PDF export so you can print a set when you want paper cards.

Frequently asked questions

What order should CVC words be taught in?

Many programs start with short a and short i words such as cat and pig, then move through short o, e and u. Mix in a few new words each week so children review the earlier sounds.

How many CVC words should one flashcard set include?

Most early readers do well with 10 to 20 new words per set, which keeps each session short. Add review cards from earlier sets as your child becomes more accurate.

Can I print the flashcards?

The free plan studies in the browser and has no exports. PDF export is included with Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month, which lets you print the cards.

Does it work from a photo of a worksheet?

Yes, photos of pages are read with text recognition, so a phonics worksheet can become flashcards. Check the words afterward, since messy handwriting can be misread.
