How to write multiple-choice poll questions that hold up

If you need a multiple choice poll generator for a research methods class or a survey unit, the hard part is the question wording, not the formatting. Good items have one clear topic, answer choices that do not overlap, and no hint toward the answer people are expected to pick.

  • Keep answer choices parallel in length and grammar so the correct one does not stand out.
  • Avoid words like always or never in wrong options unless they are clearly false.
  • Use neutral wording, since a leading question stem tells respondents what to choose.
  • Write wrong options based on common misconceptions from your reading.
Example poll design practice questions
In a poll, why should answer choices be mutually exclusive? So each respondent fits only one option, which keeps the percentages adding up to 100 and makes the results easy to read.
A poll of 1,000 randomly selected adults reports a margin of error of about 3 points at 95% confidence. What does that mean? The true population value probably falls within about 3 points above or below the reported result. The margin covers sampling variation, not every possible source of error.
What is a leading question in a poll?A question worded to push respondents toward a particular answer, such as Don't you agree that...? Neutral wording avoids biasing the results.
Why should a poll sample be randomly selected rather than self-selected?Random selection gives everyone in the population a known chance of being chosen, so results can be generalized; volunteers tend to over-represent people who feel strongly.
True or false: A larger sample always eliminates bias in a poll.False. A bigger sample reduces sampling error, but a biased sampling frame or nonresponse bias remains no matter how many people respond.

Questions from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain-text notes or photos of pages and get multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer questions drafted from them.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with a short explanation of why the correct option is right, so you can check the reasoning before you use it.

Export when you need it

Plus exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for course platforms. The free plan keeps studying in the browser.

How it works

Add your source

Upload a PDF, slide deck, document or set of notes.

Choose question types

Pick multiple choice, true or false, or open questions for the quiz.

Review and export

Check the drafts, edit the wording, then study in the browser or export if you have a paid plan.

DeckOwl drafts those questions from your own readings or lecture slides, so each one traces back to material you already have. You still need to read them: check that the wrong options are plausible and that the explanation matches your course's definitions.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good multiple-choice poll question?

A good question covers one topic in neutral language and has one clearly correct answer. The other options should be believable but wrong, so the question tests understanding rather than guessing.

How many answer choices should a multiple-choice question have?

Four is the most common format, though three to five options work well. More options add difficulty only if each one is plausible.

Does DeckOwl run live polls with an audience?

No. DeckOwl generates multiple-choice questions from your own material for studying and does not collect live votes.

Can I export the questions?

Exports are paid features: Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML. The free plan lets you study in the browser.
