How slide decks become flashcards

Most lecture decks are built to be projected, not memorized, so the bullet points rarely work as study prompts on their own. Converting PowerPoint slides to flashcards lets you turn each key term, definition or diagram label into a question you can test yourself on. DeckOwl reads the text from your .pptx file and drafts cards from it, so you start from your instructor's own material.

  • Keeps your instructor's terminology from the original slides
  • Works with PPTX, PDF, DOCX, plain-text notes and images
  • Study free in the browser, with PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export on Plus
  • Start without a credit card, and get 40% off Plus with a school email
Example flashcards from a heart anatomy slide deck
Which chamber of the heart pumps oxygenated blood to the body? The left ventricle, which has the thickest muscular wall of the four chambers.
What is the function of the right atrium? It receives deoxygenated blood from the body through the superior and inferior vena cavae.
Which valve sits between the left atrium and the left ventricle? The mitral (bicuspid) valve, which has two cusps.
What does the sinoatrial node do?It sets the heart's rhythm by generating electrical impulses, so it acts as the natural pacemaker.
Which arteries supply blood to the heart muscle itself? The coronary arteries, which branch from the aorta just above the aortic valve.

Reads PPTX slides directly

Upload a .pptx deck and DeckOwl reads the text on each slide to draft your cards.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss come back sooner, so your review time goes to what you are most likely to forget.

Photos of slides work too

Snap a picture of a projected slide and text recognition turns it into material for cards.

How it works

Upload your deck

Drop in a PPTX file, or add PDFs, notes or images from the same unit.

Review the cards

Edit or delete any card that does not match what your instructor actually covered.

Study with spaced repetition

Work through the deck in the browser, and export to Anki or CSV on the Plus plan.

Good cards are specific. One fact per card works better than a whole bullet list, so a card for a heart diagram should ask for one structure at a time. Expect to edit the draft: check that every card matches what was covered in class and remove anything that only decorates the slide.

Spaced repetition then does the rest by showing you each card again just before you would forget it. Over a term, that is far more efficient than rereading slides the night before an exam.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make from one lecture deck?

Aim for one card per term, definition or relationship in the deck rather than a fixed number. Repeated and decorative slides usually add nothing, so cut them before you study.

How do I study the parts of the heart with flashcards?

Start with the four chambers and the valves, then add the vessels that connect to them. Quiz yourself in both directions, naming a structure from its function and the function from its name.

Can I export slide flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki and CSV export are included in the Plus plan, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study the cards in the browser without exporting them.

What file types can I upload?

You can upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or notes, and images such as photos of pages, which are read with text recognition.
