Why generate your own printable cards

A lot of students want printable flashcards front and back they can cut out, carry and shuffle, with the term on one side and the answer on the other. Ready-made printable sets rarely match the course you are taking, though.

  • Term or question on the front, answer on the back
  • Built from the notes and slides you already have
  • Spaced repetition schedules reviews in the app
  • PDF export for printing is part of the Plus plan
Example intro biology flashcards, term on front, answer on back
MitochondrionOrganelle that produces most of the cell's ATP through cellular respiration.
What is osmosis?Movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from lower to higher solute concentration.
Enzyme active siteThe region where a substrate binds and the reaction is catalyzed.
How do mitosis and meiosis differ?Mitosis makes two identical diploid cells; meiosis makes four genetically varied haploid gametes.
Prokaryotic cellA cell without a membrane-bound nucleus, such as a bacterium.

Your material, not a generic set

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text, notes or photos of pages. Every card comes from the material you actually need to learn.

Front and back, every time

Each card shows a term or question on the front and a clear answer on the back, and spaced repetition schedules your reviews.

Print or export on Plus

Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, so you can print a stack. The free plan studies in the browser without exports.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of a page.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl turns the text into flashcards with the answer on the back.

Export and print

On Plus, export to PDF, print, cut the cards apart and study by hand or in the app.

DeckOwl takes a different route: it writes the cards from your own material. Upload a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of a page, and the flashcards follow your lecture order and wording, so the stack you print is the one you need for the exam.

Free accounts get 3 generations per month and can study in the browser. Printing needs export, which is on the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for one lecture?

Aim for one idea per card rather than a fixed count, since a dense lecture needs more cards than a short reading. Keep each answer short enough to recall in a few seconds.

Should the answer side be a full sentence?

Short phrases work best for recall, and a full sentence makes sense only when the reasoning matters. Check that the answer makes sense without looking at the front.

Can I print flashcards on the free plan?

The free plan lets you study in the browser but not export, so printing needs the Plus plan, which includes PDF export.

Does DeckOwl include ready-made printable sets?

No. Every set is generated from material you upload, such as PDFs, slides, notes or photos of pages.
