Why generate your own reception sight words cards

Many reception teachers send home a list of sight words, and a set of reception sight words flash cards is the simplest way to practise them. Lists differ from school to school, so a ready-made printable may include words your child has not met yet, or leave out ones on the class wall.

  • Use the exact words from your school's list or class word wall.
  • Keep sessions short, with the child reading each card aloud before flipping it.
  • Sort cards into known and still learning, and repeat the second pile more often.
  • Print the cards on Plus, or study them in the browser on the Free plan.
Example reception sight words flash cards
thePronounced thuh when followed by a consonant. It is very common, so learn it by sight rather than sounding it out.
saidPronounced sed, not sayd. The ai is silent, so it has to be learned as a whole word.
wasPronounced wuz, not wass. The vowel does not follow the usual spelling pattern.
theyPronounced thay. The ey spelling is irregular, so it is best recognised by sight.
onePronounced wun. The o sounds like w here, so it is a common tricky word to practise.

Built from your own list

Upload a PDF, a photo of the word wall, a DOCX or plain notes. The AI reads the text and turns each sight word into a card.

Spaced repetition

Words you know come back less often, and tricky ones come back sooner, so practice time goes where it is needed.

Print or export when you need to

Studying in the browser is free. PDF export for printing and Anki or CSV export are included with Plus.

How it works

Upload your word list

Add a PDF, DOCX, slide deck, notes or a photo of the list. No credit card is needed to start.

Review the cards

Check the generated cards against your school's list and remove or add any words before studying.

Practise a little each day

Work through the deck in short sessions and let spaced repetition pick the words that need another go.

Generating cards from the actual list keeps practice matched to what is being taught that week. Sight words such as said, was, they and the are learned by recognising the whole word, so short, repeated sessions with the same cards work better than long ones.

Frequently asked questions

How do I practise reception sight words at home?

Keep sessions short and regular, saying each word aloud and asking your child to read it before checking. Put words they find hard into a separate pile and go back to them the next day.

Which sight words should go on the cards?

Use the list your child's school or reception teacher gives you, since the words taught vary between schools. Uploading that list directly means the cards match what your child is learning.

Can I print the flash cards?

Printing needs a PDF export, which is included with Plus at $99.90/year or $9.99/month. The Free plan lets you study the cards in the browser.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can create cards and study on the Free plan without adding a credit card.
