Why start from your own word list

A sight word flashcard creator is most useful when it starts from the words your child actually meets in class and in books. Teachers often work from a grade-level list, while parents may want to focus on the words in a specific reading book.

  • Use a class list, a reading book page, or a word list from a curriculum you already follow.
  • Keep each set small, around 10 to 20 words, so the child can finish a session without frustration.
  • Add a short sentence on the back of irregular words so they are practiced in context.
  • Review the set weekly and retire words that are solid, then add new ones from the next lesson.
Example sight word flashcards for kindergarten readers
thePronounced 'thuh' before consonants and 'thee' before vowels, so it does not follow a sound-it-out pattern.
saidPronounced 'sed', not 'sayed'. The 'ai' spelling is irregular, so learn the whole word.
wherePronounced 'wair'. Starts with wh, so ask yourself 'where is it?' when you read it.
couldPronounced 'kud'. The 'ou' does not make its usual sound in this word.
enoughPronounced 'ih-NUF'. The 'gh' is silent, so focus on the shape of the whole word.

Start from your own words

Paste a list, upload a worksheet PDF, or photograph a page from a reading book. Text recognition reads the words so you do not have to retype them.

Spaced repetition

Words you miss come back sooner, and words you know are spaced further apart. Short daily sessions keep the common words familiar.

Study in the browser

Free accounts can practice the cards on any device with a browser. Plus adds PDF and CSV export so you can print or share a set.

How it works

Add the words

Type or paste your list, or upload a file or photo that already contains the words your child is learning.

Review the cards

Check the generated cards, remove any extra text, and add a sentence or picture cue for words that are tricky to sound out.

Practice a little every day

Run a short session, mark each word as known or missed, and let spaced repetition choose what comes back next.

Once the cards exist, the practice matters more than the printing. Five to ten minutes of daily review usually does more than one long drill, and spaced repetition brings back the words that are still shaky.

Frequently asked questions

How many sight words should a child learn in kindergarten?

Schools vary, but many kindergarten programs begin with a short high-frequency list, such as the Dolch preprimer words, and add more as reading improves. Your child's teacher can tell you which words are being taught this term.

How often should a child practice sight word flashcards?

Short daily sessions of five to ten minutes usually work better than one long session. Spaced repetition brings back words that are still shaky so practice time goes where it is needed.

Can I print my sight word flashcards?

Printing and PDF export are part of the Plus plan, which costs $39 a year or $7.99 a month. The free plan lets you study the cards in your browser with 3 generations per month.

Does it work from a photo of a worksheet?

Yes, photos of pages are read with text recognition, so you can snap a worksheet and review the words it contains. Check the generated cards for any misread words before studying.
