Why build your own sight word cards

Ready-made printable lists cover the common words, but a sight word flashcard generator works best when the cards come from the words your child is actually reading and bringing home from school.

  • Use the words from your child's own books and homework
  • Start with a short set and add words as they become familiar
  • Review missed words more often than the ones your child already knows
  • Check the back of each card to confirm the meaning in context
Example sight words for early readers
Sight word: becauseUsed to give a reason, as in We stayed in because it rained. The ending is spelled -ause, not -aws.
Sight word: saidPast tense of say, as in She said hello. The vowel is a short e, so it does not follow the ai pattern in paid.
Sight word: couldA helping verb showing ability or possibility, as in I could read that book. Often confused with would or should.
Sight word: comeA verb meaning to move toward the speaker, as in Come here. The o is spelled like a letter that does not say its usual sound.
Sight word: beforeMeans earlier than, as in Wash your hands before lunch. Notice the silent e at the end.

Built from your words

Start with your child's word list, a reading passage, or a photo of a worksheet. The cards use the words you give it, not a generic set.

Spaced repetition

Words your child misses come back more often, and words they know are spaced further apart so review time goes to what needs it.

Study anywhere

Practice in the browser on the free plan. Plus adds PDF export for printing and Anki or CSV export for other study apps.

How it works

Add the words

Type or paste a word list, upload a PDF or DOCX, or snap a photo of a page. Photos are read with text recognition.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl turns the list into flashcards with the word on the front and a short meaning or sentence on the back.

Practice a little each day

Review in short sessions. Spaced repetition brings back the cards you miss most often.

Early readers tend to learn sight words through short, frequent practice. Reviewing a small set several times a week is usually more effective than one long session, and spaced repetition builds that rhythm automatically.

Teachers and tutors can photograph a weekly word list or upload a reading passage, then adjust the cards to match each student's level before sharing them.
