How to practice Spanish flashcards effectively

Daily Spanish flashcards practice works best when the cards come from the vocabulary your class actually uses, not a generic list pulled from the internet.

  • Put one verb form or one vocabulary word on each card.
  • Write the answer in Spanish first, then check the English meaning.
  • Mix vocabulary, gender and verb tense cards in the same session.
  • Say each answer out loud before you flip the card.
Example Spanish vocabulary and grammar flashcards
How do you say "to be hungry" in Spanish?tener hambre (literally "to have hunger")
Present subjunctive of hablar, yo form, after "quiero que"hable, as in "Quiero que yo hable más despacio"
Ser or estar: which one do you use for location?estar, as in "Madrid está en España", because location uses estar.
Why is "el problema" masculine even though it ends in -a?Some common -a nouns are masculine, such as el problema, el mapa and el día, so learn the article with the noun.
Preterite of ir, yo formfui, which is the same as the preterite of ser, so context shows which verb is meant.

Cards from your own material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page, and get flashcards built from the vocabulary and grammar in it.

Spaced repetition

Words you miss come back sooner, and words you know are spaced further apart, so your review time goes to what you forget.

Study in the browser

The free plan lets you practice right away with no credit card. Plus adds export to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV.

How it works

Add your Spanish material

Upload a vocab list, a unit from your textbook, or photos of handwritten notes.

Generate your cards

DeckOwl creates question and answer flashcards from the material you provided.

Review on a schedule

Practice each day and let spaced repetition decide which cards come back next.

Keep each card to one idea. A verb form, a single meaning, or a gender rule is easier to recall than a whole paragraph, and it shows you exactly where you are stuck.

Short sessions help more than one long cram. Review the cards you missed first, then add a few new ones so older material keeps coming back.

Frequently asked questions

How many Spanish vocabulary cards should I study each day?

Most learners do better with a short daily set of new words than with one long session. Spaced repetition brings older cards back when you are likely to forget them, so new cards can be added gradually.

Do flashcards help with Spanish verb conjugations?

Yes, if you put one conjugated form on each card, such as the yo form of a verb in one tense. Repeated review helps you recall the pattern without rereading a full table.

Can I export my Spanish flashcards to Anki?

Yes, export to Anki is part of the Plus plan. The free plan lets you study your cards in the browser, with a limit of 3 generations per month.

Is there a free plan for Spanish flashcards practice?

Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser. No credit card is needed to start, and students get 40% off with a school email.
