How to practice Chinese with flashcards

Chinese flashcards practice works best when the cards match what you are learning this week. Generic decks often include words your class has not reached yet, while cards made from your own vocabulary list and textbook chapters keep your review focused.

  • Put the character on the front and pinyin with the meaning on the back.
  • Make separate cards for words that look alike, such as 已 and 己.
  • Review new cards on the day you learn them, then let spaced repetition space them out.
  • Say each word aloud before flipping the card to check your tone.
Example Chinese vocabulary flashcards for beginners
What does 谢谢 (xièxie) mean?Thank you. It is used for everyday thanks and is often answered with 不客气 (bú kèqi).
What does 我 (wǒ) mean?I or me. It is the first-person singular pronoun.
How do you write water in Chinese?水 (shuǐ), which has a third tone. It is a common radical in characters for liquids.
What does 学生 (xuésheng) mean?Student. The first character means study or learn and the second means born or life.
What does 好 (hǎo) mean and what parts make it up?Good. It combines 女 (woman) on the left and 子 (child) on the right.

Cards from your own material

Upload a PDF, PowerPoint, Word file, plain notes or a photo of a page. The text is read and turned into flashcards.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss come back sooner and easy ones come back later, so review time goes to the characters and words that need it.

Study in the browser

Practice on your laptop or phone without installing anything. The free plan includes three generations a month.

How it works

Upload your lesson

Add a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of a vocabulary page from class.

Review the generated cards

Check the characters, pinyin and meanings, then start a practice session.

Keep practicing daily

Spaced repetition schedules each card so you review it right before you would forget it.

Good Chinese cards usually show the character on one side and the pinyin, tone and meaning on the other. Keep one idea per card, and add a separate card for tricky tone pairs or radicals you keep mixing up.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters should I review each day?

Most learners do better with a short daily session than with one long weekly cram. Pick a number you can finish consistently and let spaced repetition decide which cards come back.

Should I practice tones with flashcards or with audio?

Use both if you can. Flashcards help you match a character to its tone and meaning, and listening practice trains your ear to hear the difference.

Can I export my Chinese flashcards to Anki?

Export to Anki, PDF, DOCX and CSV is included in the Plus plan. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Does a school email lower the price?

Students with a school email get 40% off. No credit card is needed to start on the free plan.
