How to turn class notes into flashcards that stick

Students who have a stack of lecture notes often want to turn my notes into flashcards before the next exam, but rewriting every key idea by hand takes hours. DeckOwl reads your PDF, slides, plain text or a photo of a page and proposes question-and-answer cards drawn from the material itself.

  • Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page
  • Get flashcards with questions and answers based on your notes
  • Study in the browser on the free plan, with 3 generations per month
  • Export to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV on Plus, at $99.90/year or $9.99/month
Example cell biology flashcards
What is the function of the mitochondrion? It produces most of the cell's ATP through cellular respiration.
Which organelle modifies, sorts and ships proteins? The Golgi apparatus, which packages proteins into vesicles for delivery.
How do prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells differ?Eukaryotic cells have a membrane-bound nucleus and organelles, while prokaryotic cells lack both.
What does the phospholipid bilayer do?It forms a selectively permeable barrier that separates the cell interior from its environment.
What is osmosis? The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from lower solute concentration to higher.

Works with your material

Upload PDFs, Word files, slides, plain text notes or photos of handwritten pages. Photos are read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards come back at expanding intervals, so you spend time on what you are about to forget instead of rereading everything.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Turn the same notes into multiple choice, true/false and short answer quizzes with explanations, or into a mind map of main ideas.

How it works

Add your notes

Upload a file or paste your text. Free accounts can start without a credit card.

Review the cards

Check the generated flashcards, edit any that are wrong or unclear, and remove the ones you do not need.

Study on a schedule

Open your deck in the browser and rate each card. The schedule adjusts to how well you recall each answer.

Good cards ask about one fact at a time. Instead of a card that says "cell organelles," write a question such as "What does the Golgi apparatus do?" Short, specific prompts are easier to check against your notes and easier to answer under time pressure.

Once the cards exist, spaced repetition does the scheduling. Cards you miss return sooner and cards you know drop out of rotation, which keeps review sessions short across a semester.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make from one lecture?

Most lectures hold somewhere between 10 and 25 testable facts, so a deck of that size is a reasonable target. Start with the cards the generator proposes, then delete any that repeat each other.

How often should I review flashcards?

Review a little every day rather than cramming the night before, because spacing gives memory time to consolidate. Spaced repetition handles the timing for you by showing hard cards again sooner.

Can I export my flashcards to Anki?

Yes, but export is a paid feature. The Plus plan includes export to Anki, PDF, DOCX and CSV.

Is there a free plan?

Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser. Exports are not included on the free plan.
