Turn your own notes into Moodle-ready quiz questions
DeckOwl writes multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions from your slides, PDFs or notes, each with an explanation. It does not generate matching sets, so use it for the question types it covers.
Writing Moodle quiz questions from your own material
Most Moodle matching quiz items start as a list of terms and definitions sitting in a lecture deck or a set of notes. Typing each pair into Moodle by hand is slow, and the quiz is only as useful as the pairs in it. DeckOwl does not build matching sets, but it can write multiple-choice and true/false questions from the same slides, with explanations.
- Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, notes or photos of pages.
- Get multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions with explanations.
- Review and edit every question before using it in a course.
- Export Moodle XML and QTI 2.1 on the Pro plan.
Built from your material
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or a photo of a page and get questions drawn from that content.
Explanations on every question
Each multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer question includes a short explanation so students learn why the answer is right.
Moodle XML export on Pro
The Pro plan exports Moodle XML and QTI 2.1 so you can import questions into your course bank.
How it works
Upload your notes
Add slides, a PDF, a DOCX file or plain text. Photos of printed pages are read with text recognition.
Review the questions
Check each question and explanation against your course material and edit anything that is unclear.
Export or study
Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to Moodle XML on Pro.
Good questions come from the source. Keep each question tied to one idea in your notes, check that wrong answers are plausible, and remove anything the lecture did not cover. Once the set looks right, export it to Moodle XML on the Pro plan and import it into your course question bank.

Frequently asked questions
How many pairs should a matching question include?
Five to seven pairs is a common range. Larger sets make guessing by elimination easier and take longer to answer.
What makes a good distractor in a quiz?
A good distractor is a plausible answer that a student could confuse with the correct one. Obviously wrong options test very little.
Does DeckOwl make matching questions?
No. It generates multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions with explanations from your own material.
Can I export questions to Moodle?
Moodle XML export is part of the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.
