Why decks don't transfer, and what to do instead

If you want to upload an Anki deck to Quizlet, you will need a tool that reads that deck format, and DeckOwl is not one of them. It works from the material you already have, so the cards come from your own course content rather than a file you move between apps.

  • Flashcards are generated from PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages
  • Spaced repetition schedules reviews so harder cards come back sooner
  • Quizzes with explanations are available alongside flashcards
  • Export to Anki is a Plus feature at $39/year or $7.99/month
Example introductory biology flashcards
What is the powerhouse organelle of the cell? The mitochondrion, which produces most of the cell's ATP through cellular respiration.
What is osmosis? The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from lower solute concentration to higher solute concentration.
What does DNA polymerase do during replication? It adds complementary nucleotides to the growing strand in the 5' to 3' direction.
How do mitosis and meiosis differ?Mitosis produces two genetically identical diploid cells; meiosis produces four genetically varied haploid cells.
What is the role of the Krebs cycle? It oxidizes acetyl-CoA to CO2 and generates NADH, FADH2 and a small amount of ATP in the mitochondrial matrix.

Starts from your material

Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or images. Photos of pages are read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition built in

Flashcards are scheduled for review so you spend time on the cards you are most likely to forget.

Export to Anki

On Plus, export your generated cards to Anki as a deck, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV.

How it works

Upload your source

Add the lecture slides, notes or textbook pages you are studying from.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl creates question and answer cards from your material in one pass.

Study or export

Review in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki on Plus.

Most students find it faster to rebuild a deck from the source notes than to fix an imported one. Generating cards from your slides or PDFs keeps each question tied to the lecture it came from, and you can export the result to Anki if you want to keep studying there.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for introductory biology?

Aim for one card per key term or concept from each lecture, which often means 20 to 40 cards per chapter. Keep each card to a single fact so reviews stay quick and accurate.

What is the best way to study cell biology terms with flashcards?

Write the term or question on the front and a short answer in your own words on the back. Review missed cards more often and spread sessions over several days rather than cramming.

Can I export flashcards to Anki?

Yes, export to Anki is included in the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Can I import an existing Anki or Quizlet deck into DeckOwl?

No, DeckOwl does not import existing decks. Upload your PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain notes, or photos of pages, and it generates new flashcards from them.
