Learn where flashcards came from, then turn your notes into a deck

Flashcards have a long history, and spaced repetition is what made them a serious study method. Upload a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of a page and get a deck scheduled for review.

Where flashcards came from and how to make your own

Flashcards have no single inventor and no exact invention date, since people have written key terms on cards for centuries. The modern version of flashcards owes most to Sebastian Leitner, whose 1972 card-box method sorted cards by how well you knew them and reviewed the weak ones more often.

  • Write one fact per card so each review tests a single idea.
  • Put the question on the front and the answer on the back.
  • Review weak cards more often than the ones you already know.
  • Export to Anki or CSV from a Plus plan if you want to keep studying elsewhere.
Example history of inventions flashcards
Who popularized the box-based spaced review method for flashcards?Sebastian Leitner, in his 1972 book on learning, which described the Leitner system of card boxes.
When did Alexander Graham Bell receive the US patent for the telephone?March 7, 1876, which covered the electric speech transmission he had developed.
When did the Wright brothers make the first powered, controlled airplane flight?December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, because it was the first sustained flight with a pilot aboard a powered aircraft.
When did Johannes Gutenberg develop movable metal type printing in Europe?Around the 1440s in Mainz, because movable type made printing books far faster than hand copying.
When did Tim Berners-Lee propose the World Wide Web?1989, while he was working at CERN, because he wanted a shared system for linking documents.

Built from your material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or photos of pages. Text in images is read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know wait longer, so review time goes where it is needed.

Study in the browser

The free plan lets you study decks in the browser with 3 generations per month. No credit card is needed to start.

How it works

Upload your source

Add the chapter, lecture slides or notes you need to learn.

Generate the deck

DeckOwl writes flashcards with fronts that ask and backs that answer, based on your text.

Review on schedule

Study the deck in the browser and let spaced repetition bring back the cards you find hard.

Spaced repetition is the idea that you review material just before you would forget it. DeckOwl applies that scheduling to decks it creates from your own files, so you do not have to sort cards into boxes by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Who invented flashcards?

No one person is credited with inventing flashcards. The box-based review method that made them popular is usually linked to Sebastian Leitner and his 1972 book.

How many flashcards should I make for one topic?

Most students do better with short decks of a few dozen cards per topic than with one very long deck. Split large chapters into sections so each deck stays manageable.

Is spaced repetition the same as flashcards?

No. Flashcards are the study material, and spaced repetition is the schedule that decides when each card comes back. Using both together is what makes the method effective.

Can I export my flashcards?

Exports are a paid feature. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, while the free plan lets you study decks in the browser.
