Getting a concept map without starting from a blank page

Lecture slides and long textbook chapters rarely arrive in an order you can map, so when you want an XMind concept map from them, the structure has to come from somewhere. DeckOwl reads your own file and proposes a central idea with branches, so you start editing instead of staring at an empty canvas.

  • Start with one central idea and work outward to supporting details.
  • Keep each branch to a single concept so the links between branches stay clear.
  • Mark cross-links that show cause, effect, or dependency between branches.
  • Turn the finished map into a quiz to check whether you can explain each link.
Example photosynthesis concept map branches
Light-dependent reactionsOccur in thylakoid membranes · Split water and release oxygen · Produce ATP and NADPH
Calvin cycleTakes place in the stroma · Fixes carbon dioxide using RuBisCO · Uses ATP and NADPH from the light reactions
Chloroplast structureThylakoids stacked into grana · Stroma surrounds the thylakoids · Chlorophyll sits in thylakoid membranes
Factors limiting photosynthesisLight intensity · Carbon dioxide concentration · Temperature
Reactants and productsReactants are carbon dioxide and water · Products are glucose and oxygen · Light energy drives the process

Editable branches

Adjust nodes after generation so the map matches how you think about the material.

Explorable structure

Follow each branch from the main idea outward to see how the subtopics connect.

Built from your files

Start from lecture slides, textbook chapters, or a photo of a page, which is read with text recognition.

How it works

Add your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes, or an image of a page.

Generate the map

The AI pulls out the main ideas and arranges them as branches with supporting points.

Edit and study

Adjust the nodes you want to change, then explore the map in your browser.

A good map keeps each branch to one concept and marks the links between branches, such as cause and effect or dependency. Review the generated structure against your source, fix anything that is missing or misplaced, and then test yourself on the connections.

Frequently asked questions

How many branches should a concept map have?

There is no fixed number. Most maps for a single lecture have a handful of main branches with two to four supporting points each, and a branch that gets crowded should be split.

How do I study from a concept map?

Cover the map and redraw it from memory, then check which links you missed. Explaining each connection out loud is more useful than rereading the branch labels.

Can I export my map to XMind?

No. DeckOwl exports PDF, DOCX, Anki, and CSV on Plus, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML, so an XMind file is not one of the options.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start. Students get 40% off with a school email.
