How a mind map fits into your Obsidian workflow

Obsidian keeps each idea in its own Markdown note, which is great for linking but harder to see as one picture. An Obsidian mind map builder pulls the main topics out of a long note and lays them out as branches you can rearrange.

  • Start from one central topic per note so each map stays focused.
  • Use branches for categories and sub-points for the details that support them.
  • Collapse finished sections to see what still needs review.
  • Turn the map into flashcards or a quiz when you are ready to practice recall.
Example Obsidian note-linking concepts
What does a double-bracket link do in Obsidian?Creates an internal link to another note · Opens that note when clicked · Adds the link to the other note's backlinks list
What is an Obsidian vault?A folder that holds your notes · Notes are plain Markdown files · Settings and plugins are stored inside the vault
What is Obsidian Canvas?A built-in infinite board for placing notes and images · Cards can be connected with arrows · Saved as .canvas files
What does YAML frontmatter do in a note?Stores properties between two --- lines at the top · Holds fields such as tags, aliases, and dates · Shows as editable properties in the note
How does Obsidian handle tags?Written with a # symbol anywhere in a note · Nested tags use slashes like #study/biology · Tags can be searched and listed in the tag pane

Editable branches

Rename, move, or add nodes after the map is generated so it matches how you think about the material.

Explorable maps

Expand and collapse branches to focus on one topic at a time instead of scanning the whole map.

Notes or documents

Paste text from an Obsidian note or upload a PDF, DOCX, or PPTX file as your starting material.

How it works

Paste or upload

Copy the text of a note from your vault, or upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, or a photo of a page.

Review the branches

Check the main topics and sub-points the AI pulled out of your material.

Edit and explore

Adjust nodes and expand branches while you study, then keep the version that works for you.

Paste the text of a note or upload a PDF, and the map appears with the central idea at the middle. You can move branches, rename nodes, and collapse sections so the layout matches how you study. A map is also a quick way to check whether a long chapter or lecture has been fully covered.

Frequently asked questions

How many branches should a study mind map have?

Most useful maps have three to seven main branches, each with two to four sub-points. If a branch grows past that, split it into its own map or note.

How is a mind map different from Obsidian Canvas?

Canvas is a free-form board where you place notes and connect them yourself, while a mind map is generated from your material and organized as a hierarchy. You can still edit the result to match your own structure.

Can I export my mind map to Obsidian?

There is no direct Obsidian export. Paid plans export PDF, DOCX, Anki, and CSV files, and the free plan lets you study maps in the browser.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and it does not include exports. No credit card is needed to start.
