Why map your Obsidian vault first

A mind map of your Obsidian notes shows how ideas in a vault connect, which helps most when links have grown faster than your folder structure. Upload the notes you already have, and DeckOwl builds a branching map of the main topics and their subtopics that you can edit and click through.

  • Spot topics that have no index note yet
  • See which notes sit at the edges of a cluster
  • Check that a course folder covers every unit
  • Find gaps before you review or export study material
Example Obsidian note structures to map
Links and backlinksType [[note name]] to link notes · The backlinks panel lists notes that link to the current one · Unlinked mentions help find missed connections
Maps of Content (MOCs)Index notes that link related notes on one topic · Act as a hub for a folder or course · Add structure without moving files
Vault and file structureA vault is a folder of plain Markdown files · Notes stay on your device · Links define structure more than folders do
Graph viewShows notes as nodes and links as connections · Filters can hide tags or orphan notes · Best for spotting clusters rather than reading content
Templates and daily notesCore plugins insert reusable note layouts · Daily notes create one dated note per day · Templates can include properties

How it works

Upload or paste

Add a PDF, DOCX, or text copied from your Obsidian notes.

Generate the map

DeckOwl outlines the main topics and subtopics in one pass.

Edit and explore

Adjust branches and click through them to check what is connected.

Mapping works best with a clear scope. Map one Map of Content or one course folder at a time so each branch stays readable, then add any missing connections by hand in Obsidian.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the main topics in a large Obsidian vault before mapping it?

Start with your Maps of Content or any index notes, since they already group related ideas. If you have none, pick one folder and map it on its own so the topics stay manageable.

Should I map each folder separately or the whole vault?

Map folders or single topics separately when the vault is large, because a single map of everything becomes hard to read. A whole-vault map works better for a small vault or for a high-level overview.

Can I upload my Obsidian notes directly?

Copy the note text into a plain text file, or export the notes to PDF or DOCX first. Both routes work with the free plan, which includes 3 generations per month.

Can I export the mind map or the study material I make from it?

The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports. The Plus plan adds PDF, DOCX, Anki, and CSV export and unlimited generations.
