How a Q&A mind map helps you study

A Q&A mind map pairs each main idea with a question and its answer, so you test recall while you can still see how the ideas connect. Because the map is editable, you can add those question branches yourself once DeckOwl has laid out the structure.

  • Keep one main branch per topic and no more than four or five sub-points under it.
  • Write answers in your own words so you have to recall the idea, not recognize it.
  • Cover the answers and quiz yourself from the questions before you check the map.
  • Redraw the map from memory once a week to find the gaps you still need to fill.

Pairs with quizzes and flashcards

Turn the same notes into quizzes with explanations or flashcards with spaced repetition when you want more practice.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file, or a photo of a page. No credit card is needed to start.

Review the mind map

Check the main branches and sub-points, then edit anything that does not match your lecture.

Add questions and test yourself

Write a question at each branch in the map, then cover the answers and recall them before you check.

Starting from your own notes keeps the map tied to what your instructor covered. Pull out the terms and rules that matter most, then check each branch against the source before you rely on it.

Review the map at a regular pace rather than all at once. Revisiting it over several days helps the answers stick better than one long session.

Frequently asked questions

How do I study with a mind map that has questions and answers?

Cover the answer side of each branch, say the answer out loud or write it down, then check. Mark the branches you missed and review them again sooner than the rest.

How many branches should a study mind map have?

Aim for one main branch per topic with three to five sub-points under it. If a branch grows much bigger, split it into two maps so each one stays easy to scan.

Can I edit the mind map after DeckOwl creates it?

Yes. You can rename, move, and reorganize branches so the map matches your course. Your edits stay in the map until you change them again.

Can I export my mind map?

PDF and DOCX export are part of the Plus plan, which costs $39 per year or $7.99 per month. The free plan lets you study in the browser, but it does not include exports.
