How tag questions work and how to quiz yourself on them

English tag questions are the short add-ons at the end of a statement, like "isn't it?" in "It's cold, isn't it?" If you want Blooket-style tag questions for review, the useful part is the rule rather than the game: a positive statement takes a negative tag, and a negative statement takes a positive one.

  • Positive statement, negative tag: "She is here, isn't she?"
  • Negative statement, positive tag: "He never lies, does he?"
  • Exceptions such as "I am" and "Let's" need to be memorized
  • Short answer items make you produce the tag yourself
Example English tag questions practice items
She has finished the report, ___?hasn't she? The statement is positive, so the tag is negative.
He never arrives late, ___?does he? The statement is negative because of never, so the tag is positive.
Let's meet at noon, ___?shall we? Let's is an exception and takes shall we as its tag.
I am right, ___?aren't I? Am not is not used in tags, so the form is aren't I.
Nobody called while I was out, ___?did they? Nobody makes the statement negative, so the tag is positive.

Multiple choice, true/false, short answer

Mix question types so tag questions are tested from several angles, including positive and negative tags.

Explanations for every answer

Each question shows why the correct tag works, so the rule sticks after the quiz is over.

Start from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages and generate a quiz from that wording.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or a photo of a page from your grammar lesson.

Choose question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false or short answer for your tag questions set.

Study or export

Practice in the browser on the free plan, or export to PDF, DOCX, Anki or CSV on Plus.

Most learners get stuck on exceptions. "I am" takes "aren't I?", "Let's" takes "shall we?", and words like nobody, never or hardly make a statement negative, so the tag turns positive. Quizzing yourself with true/false and short answer items exposes these gaps faster than rereading a grammar chapter.

Upload your own grammar notes or a worksheet and DeckOwl drafts questions from that wording, so the practice matches what your class actually covers.

Frequently asked questions

How many tag questions should I practice at once?

Start with a small set covering both positive and negative statements, then add the exceptions once the basic pattern feels automatic. Mixing question types helps you recall the rule rather than just recognize it.

What is the rule for tag questions with negative words like never?

Words such as never, nobody, hardly and nothing make the statement negative, so the tag is positive, as in "Nobody called, did they?"

Can I export my tag questions quiz?

Yes, on paid plans: Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. You can start on the free plan, which includes 3 generations per month, and students with a school email get 40% off.
