Spot cheating on Canvas quizzes with fresh question sets
DeckOwl does not proctor exams or flag cheating. It generates new multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions from your own material, so you can build varied quizzes to pair with Canvas settings that make copying harder.
How to think about cheating on Canvas quizzes
A quiz that students can answer by searching in a second window tells you little about what they know. Detecting cheating on Canvas quizzes works best as a combination of quiz design and review, not a single setting.
- Draw questions from a larger bank so students receive different subsets.
- Shuffle answer choices so answer positions cannot be shared by name.
- Use one question at a time and time limits to reduce quick lookups.
- Review item analysis for questions with unusual correct-rate patterns before drawing conclusions.
Fresh question sets
Upload your slides, notes or PDFs and get new multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations, so students are not working from the same answer key year after year.
Question pools you control
Generate a larger set than one quiz needs, then draw different subsets into Canvas quiz banks so each student sees a different mix of items.
Export when you need it
Free plans study in the browser. Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export for moving questions into other learning platforms.
How it works
Upload your course material
Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page. Scanned pages are read with text recognition.
Choose question types
Pick multiple-choice, true/false or short answer, and review each question and its explanation before using it.
Build the quiz in Canvas
Add the questions to a Canvas quiz and turn on settings such as shuffled answers, random question pools and time limits.
Canvas includes options that make copying less useful, such as shuffling answer order and drawing questions from a bank. Its item analysis can also show which questions many students answered in an unusual way, which is a prompt to look closer rather than proof of misconduct. For stronger control, Canvas works with third-party lockdown tools such as Respondus LockDown Browser, which your institution may already license.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a Canvas quiz harder to cheat on?
Use a larger question bank with random draws, shuffle answer choices, and set a time limit. Pair these with a lockdown tool if your school provides one, since Canvas does not block other windows on its own.
Can I write enough distinct questions for a question pool?
DeckOwl can generate multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions from your own material, which gives you a larger starting set to edit. Review each one, because the explanations should be checked against your course content.
Does DeckOwl detect cheating on Canvas?
No. DeckOwl creates study and quiz material and does not monitor students or flag suspicious activity. Exports to QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML are available on Pro.
Is DeckOwl free to try?
The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start. Exports such as PDF and DOCX require a paid plan.
