How partial credit usually works

Canvas quiz partial credit usually depends on the question type and on how your instructor sets the points. On a multiple-answer question, a common approach is to award a point for each correct option selected and subtract for each incorrect one, with the total not dropping below zero. Some instructors use all-or-nothing scoring instead, where any wrong selection removes credit for the whole question.

  • Multiple-answer questions are the most common place partial credit appears.
  • Penalty schemes can push a score to zero even when some answers are correct.
  • All-or-nothing scoring gives no credit unless every selection is right.
  • Read the instructions and scoring setting before you start a timed quiz.
Example partial credit practice questions
A multiple-answer question has 4 options, 2 correct. A student selects both correct options and one incorrect option, worth 2 points under a penalty scheme. What score is earned?1 of 2 points, because the incorrect selection cancels one correct credit.
Why can a student who selects all four options get zero on a penalty-scored multiple-answer question?Every incorrect option subtracts from the correct credit, so the net total falls to zero or below, which is floored at zero.
Under all-or-nothing scoring, a student selects 3 of 4 correct options and no wrong ones. What score is earned?0 points, because the answer is not complete and all-or-nothing scoring gives no partial credit.
Do true/false questions usually allow partial credit? No, because they have one correct answer, so the response is scored as fully right or fully wrong.
What is the main purpose of partial credit on a quiz?It rewards partly correct understanding by giving points for correct parts of an answer rather than scoring the whole response as wrong.

Multiple-choice and true/false

Create quizzes in the formats your course uses, with an explanation attached to every correct answer.

Questions from your material

Upload a PDF, slide deck, DOCX file, plain notes or a photo of a page and get questions drawn from that content.

Export on paid plans

Pro exports QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML files, and Plus exports PDF and DOCX, so you can reuse what you generate.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or image of your notes.

Choose question types

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions and set how many you want.

Review and practice

Check each question and explanation, then study the quiz in the browser before your next Canvas quiz.

Before you take a quiz, check the question settings or ask your instructor which scoring method applies. Knowing the rule changes how you should answer: selecting every option can backfire under a penalty scheme, while selecting only the options you are confident about may be safer. Practicing with questions that follow the same format helps you spot these trade-offs before the real attempt.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a multiple-answer question that can be scored fairly?

State the number of correct options in the question stem so students know what to expect. Write incorrect options that are clearly wrong, so each choice can be judged on its own.

Should true/false questions ever offer partial credit?

Usually not, because a true/false question has a single correct answer and is scored as right or wrong. Partial credit is more often used on questions with several correct parts.

Can I export generated quizzes to QTI or Moodle XML?

Yes, QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are available on the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. PDF and DOCX export are included in Plus at $39 per year or $7.99 per month.

Can I start without paying?

Yes, the Free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser. Exports are not included on Free, and no credit card is needed to start.
