Find out whether a Canvas quiz records you, and what to expect
DeckOwl turns your own notes, slides or PDFs into practice quizzes with explanations, so you can prepare for a Canvas quiz whatever your school monitors.
What a Canvas quiz actually keeps track of
Many students ask whether a Canvas quiz records you, and the answer depends on how your instructor and school set up the quiz. Canvas keeps timestamped quiz logs for instructors, such as when an attempt started, when answers were saved and when it was submitted. Canvas does not turn on a webcam or microphone by itself.
- Canvas itself logs quiz timing and submission events, which instructors can review.
- Webcam, microphone or screen recording is added by a separate proctoring tool, not by Canvas alone.
- Locked browsers such as Respondus LockDown Browser restrict other apps during an attempt when a school requires them.
- Check the syllabus or ask your instructor before the quiz so you know exactly what is monitored.
Quizzes from your material
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions.
Explanations for every answer
Each question comes with a short explanation of why the correct answer is right, so wrong answers become study notes.
Export when you need it
PDF and DOCX export are part of Plus, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are part of Pro.
How it works
Upload your notes
Add the readings, lecture slides or class notes that your Canvas quiz covers.
Generate a quiz
Choose the question types and DeckOwl builds a set of questions with explanations.
Practice until it feels routine
Work through the quiz in your browser, review the explanations and retake the questions you missed.
Video, audio or screen monitoring usually comes from a proctoring tool that your school connects to Canvas, or from a locked browser that blocks other apps and tabs during the attempt. The course syllabus, the quiz settings or your instructor can tell you which tool, if any, applies to a given quiz.

Frequently asked questions
How many practice questions should I work through before a Canvas quiz?
Aim for enough questions to cover every topic on the quiz at least twice, and focus extra time on the ones you keep missing. Retaking the same set after a day or two helps more than one long session.
Does Canvas record video of me during a quiz?
Canvas does not record video by default. If your school requires video monitoring, it comes from a proctoring tool connected to the quiz, so check the quiz settings or ask your instructor which one is used.
Can I export my DeckOwl quiz to Canvas?
PDF and DOCX export are available on the Plus plan, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are available on Pro. Export is not included on the free plan, which lets you study in the browser.
Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?
No, you can start without a credit card. The free plan includes 3 generations per month, and students get 40% off paid plans with a school email.
