What a Gimkit code is and what DeckOwl does instead

A Gimkit code is the short join key a host shares so players can enter a live game, and DeckOwl does not create those codes or host games. What it can do is turn the code lessons you already have into practice questions, so you can prepare before a class quiz.

  • Multiple-choice, true/false and open questions generated from your own code notes
  • Explanations that show why each answer is correct
  • Flashcards with spaced repetition for keywords and syntax
  • Free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study
Example beginner Python code flashcards
What does len() return for a Python list? The number of items in the list, so len([4, 7, 9]) returns 3.
What is a variable in code?A named location that stores a value, such as x = 5 saving 5 under the name x.
What does a for loop do?It repeats an indented block of code once for each item in a sequence.
What is the difference between = and == in Python?= assigns a value to a variable, while == compares two values and returns True or False.
What does an if statement check?Whether a condition is True, and it runs its indented block only when the condition is True.

Questions from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or a photo of a page, and get questions based on what your notes actually say.

Explanations with every answer

Each multiple-choice, true/false or short answer question includes an explanation, so you can see why an answer is right.

Spaced repetition for flashcards

Review cards on a schedule that brings back the ones you miss, so programming terms stick over time.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slides, a DOCX file or plain text from your code class or lab handout.

Choose a question type

Pick multiple choice, true/false, open questions, flashcards or a mind map of the topic.

Practice in the browser

Study the generated set on the free plan, or export it if you have a paid plan.

If your course covers Python, JavaScript or another language, upload the lecture slides or reference sheet and DeckOwl will write questions on syntax, loops, variables and common errors. Each question comes with an explanation, so the practice teaches the reasoning, not only the answer.

Frequently asked questions

How should I study code syntax with flashcards?

Make one card per concept, such as a keyword, operator or function, and put a short working example on the back. Review the cards at spaced intervals and rewrite the examples from memory.

What should a beginner Python quiz cover?

Start with variables, data types, if statements, loops and functions, since most later topics build on them. Practice reading short snippets and predicting the output before you check the answer.

Can DeckOwl host a live game like Gimkit?

No. DeckOwl is a study tool, and it does not host live games or issue join codes. Exporting to QTI or Moodle XML is a Pro feature for teachers who use those systems.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, with no exports, and you do not need a credit card to start.
