What DeckOwl does and does not do for game sessions

If you want to host and join Gimkit games with your class, the host and join steps are handled inside Gimkit, not DeckOwl. What DeckOwl can do is create the questions beforehand: upload your slides or notes and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations.

  • Upload notes, slides or a photo of a page and get questions drawn from that material.
  • Choose multiple-choice, true/false or open questions, with an explanation for each.
  • Review and edit every question before using it in a live session.
  • Export to PDF or DOCX on Plus, or to QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML on Pro.
Example practice questions for a classroom review game
What is the main job of a host in a live quiz game?To start the session and share the join code, then control pacing so every player can answer each question.
True or false: players usually need the host's join code to enter a live session.True. The code connects each player's device to that one session, so the host must share it first.
Why should a review question include an explanation?Because the explanation shows why the correct answer is right, which helps students learn from wrong answers.
What should a good distractor in a multiple-choice question do?Sound plausible to someone who has partly studied the topic, so it reveals a common misunderstanding.
Why keep a review quiz to one topic?A focused set helps students build a clear mental model, and players can connect each answer to the same material.

Questions from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or a photo of a page and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions.

Explanations on every answer

Each question comes with an explanation, so students learn why an answer is right, not just which one to pick.

Exports for your class

On paid plans, export to PDF or DOCX for printing, or to QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for a learning management system.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add the slides, chapter or lecture notes you plan to review with your class.

Generate and check the questions

Pick a question type, review the output and edit anything that is unclear before the session.

Run the session in your game tool

Use Gimkit or another platform to host and join the game, and use your DeckOwl questions as the content.

The free plan gives you 3 generations per month and in-browser study. Plus, at $39 per year or $7.99 per month, adds unlimited generations and PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export. Pro, at $14.99 per month, adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export. Students get 40% off with a school email, and no credit card is needed to start.

Frequently asked questions

How do I host or join a Gimkit game?

DeckOwl does not run live games or provide join codes. For current host and join steps, check Gimkit's own help pages, since those steps belong to Gimkit.

How many questions should a review quiz have?

For most single-topic review sessions, 10 to 20 questions covers the material well. Shorter sets keep players focused and leave time for explanations.

What makes a good question for a live quiz game?

Ask about one idea per question, make the wrong answers plausible, and avoid answers that give away the right choice through length or wording. A short explanation after each answer helps the class learn from mistakes.

Can DeckOwl export questions to a game platform?

Exports are paid features. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML, so check which format your platform accepts.
