Why build a friend group quiz from your own material

If you want a friend group quiz that is more than a few guesses typed into a blank form, start with material you already have. A lecture handout, a book chapter or a set of your own notes gives you accurate facts to build questions from, so the answers hold up when someone argues about them.

  • Multiple-choice questions with one correct answer and plausible distractors
  • True/false questions with a one-sentence reason for each answer
  • Open questions for answers that need a sentence or two
  • Explanations you can read aloud when the group wants the reason behind an answer
Example general knowledge questions for a friend group quiz
What is the capital of Australia?Canberra. Sydney is the largest city, but Canberra was chosen as the capital in the early 1900s.
Which gas do plants absorb from the air for photosynthesis?Carbon dioxide. Plants combine it with water using light energy to make sugars and release oxygen.
How many players from one team are on the field in a standard soccer match?Eleven. That includes the goalkeeper, and the rules set this number for the field.
Which element has the chemical symbol Au?Gold. The symbol comes from the Latin word aurum.

Questions from your own material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions based on that content.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with a short explanation, so the person who guesses wrong learns why the answer was correct.

Exports when you need them

Plus exports to PDF and DOCX. Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for classroom platforms.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of a page. Text recognition reads photos.

Choose the question types

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or open questions and how many you want.

Review and share

Read through the questions, edit what you like, then study in the browser or export a copy.

Typing every question and wrong answer by hand takes longer than most people expect. DeckOwl reads your upload and drafts questions with correct answers and short explanations, and you cut the ones that are too easy or too obscure before you send the quiz out.

DeckOwl is a study tool, not a Google Forms add-on, so the quiz lives in DeckOwl and you copy questions into any form you like or export them as a file.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions work best for a friend group quiz?

Ten to fifteen questions usually fit a single round, with a mix of easy and harder items so everyone scores at least a few points. Shorter sets keep attention from drifting.

What makes a good multiple-choice trivia question?

Write one clearly correct answer and three distractors that are plausible but clearly wrong to someone who knows the topic. Avoid trick wording, and check that the question has only one defensible answer.

Can I export the quiz to Google Forms?

Google Forms is not one of DeckOwl's export formats. You can export to PDF or DOCX on the Plus plan, then copy the questions into a form.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, but it does not include exports. No credit card is needed to start.
