What quiz mode does and how to use it for studying

Self-grading is the appeal of Google Forms quiz mode: you write questions, people answer them, and the score comes back without anyone marking papers by hand. For studying, the same idea works best when the questions come from your own course material rather than a blank form you have to fill in yourself.

  • Multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions from your own material
  • An explanation for every answer so you learn from the misses
  • Study in the browser on the free plan, with 3 generations a month
  • Export to PDF, DOCX or Moodle XML on paid plans
Example cell biology quiz questions used as a sample subject
Which organelle produces most of a cell's ATP?Mitochondria. They carry out cellular respiration, which releases the energy stored in glucose and captures it as ATP.
True or false: plant cells lack a cell membrane.False. Plant cells have a cell membrane inside the cell wall, and the wall only adds structure outside it.
What is the main job of ribosomes?Protein synthesis. They read messenger RNA and link amino acids together into polypeptide chains.
Why does water move into a red blood cell placed in pure water?Osmosis. The solution inside the cell has a higher solute concentration, so water flows in across the membrane and can burst the cell.
In which phase of mitosis do chromosomes line up at the cell's equator?Metaphase. Spindle fibers attach to the sister chromatids and align them along the metaphase plate.

Three question types

Multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions are generated from your material, so you can mix formats in one quiz.

Explanations on every question

Each question shows the correct answer and a short explanation, so a wrong answer teaches you something instead of just marking it wrong.

Works from your own material

Start from your lecture slides, reading PDF or typed notes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or a photo of a page.

Choose question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false, short answer or a mix for your quiz.

Take the quiz and review

Answer the questions, read the explanations and go back to the ones you missed.

DeckOwl builds the quiz from the PDFs, slides or notes you upload. Every question comes with the correct answer and a short explanation, and you can practice in the browser on the free plan. Exporting the quiz to PDF or DOCX is part of the Plus plan, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are part of Pro.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a quiz on one cell biology chapter include?

Around 10 to 15 questions usually cover the main ideas of one chapter without making the session too long. Weight the questions toward terms and processes you find hardest to remember.

How should I study after I get a quiz question wrong?

Read the explanation, then try the same idea again in a different wording a day or two later. Repeating missed questions after a delay is more effective than rereading the same answer right away.

Can I export my quiz?

Exports are paid features. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, but it does not include exports. No credit card is needed to start.
