How Google Forms quiz settings work

Google Forms quiz settings decide whether your form grades answers, when respondents see their results and what feedback they get. Most of the confusion comes from the Quizzes tab, where one toggle changes how every question behaves.

  • Turn on 'Make this a quiz' before you set any answer keys, since the grading options only appear in quiz mode.
  • Decide on release timing before sharing the link, especially if short answers need manual grading.
  • Use the missed questions and correct answers options only when you want respondents to review their mistakes.
  • Check point values across the whole form so the total score matches what you planned.
Example Google Forms quiz settings questions
Which setting turns a Google Form into a quiz that can assign points? The 'Make this a quiz' toggle under Settings, Quizzes. It switches the form into quiz mode so you can set answer keys and point values.
What does choosing 'Release grade: Later, after manual review' do?It holds grades until you review responses yourself, which is useful when short answers need hand grading before respondents see scores.
What does the 'Missed questions' option control?Whether respondents can see which questions they answered incorrectly after they submit, so they can review their mistakes.
Where do you set the correct answer for a multiple-choice question? In that question's answer key, which appears once quiz mode is on, because grading depends on the key matching the right option.

How it works

Turn on quiz mode

In Google Forms, open Settings, go to Quizzes and switch on 'Make this a quiz'.

Set answer keys and points

Open each question, mark the correct answer and assign its point value.

Choose what respondents see

Pick when grades are released and which feedback to show, such as missed questions or correct answers.

Once the settings are clear, the harder part is writing questions and correct answers worth grading. Build the question set from your course material first, check each explanation against your notes, and then copy the finished items into your form.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn on quiz mode in Google Forms?

Open the Settings tab, go to Quizzes and switch on 'Make this a quiz'. Then open each question to set its answer key and point value.

How should I choose questions for a study quiz?

Start with the terms and claims your course stresses most, and mix recall questions with a few scenario questions. A short set focused on one topic usually helps more than a long mixed one.
