Writing good questions for a Google Forms quiz or survey

Most people building a Google Forms quiz and survey already have material in hand, such as a lecture deck, a reading or class notes. Retyping every question takes time, and it is easy to write questions that test trivia instead of the main ideas. DeckOwl reads your file and drafts questions from it, so you start with a working set you can edit.

  • Ask one thing per question so each answer means something.
  • Use neutral wording that does not suggest a preferred answer.
  • Keep answer choices mutually exclusive and roughly equal in length.
  • Test the form with two or three people before sharing the link.
Example survey design checks for a Google Forms survey
Why is 'How satisfied are you with our price and quality?' a poor survey question? It is double-barreled, so a respondent who likes the price but not the quality cannot answer accurately. Split it into two separate questions.
What is a leading question?A question worded to push respondents toward one answer, such as 'How much did you enjoy our fast service?' Neutral wording like 'How would you rate our service speed?' avoids this.
What does marking a Google Forms question as Required do?It stops the form from submitting until that question is answered, which prevents blank answers in your results.
Why should you pilot a survey before sending it to everyone?A small test run reveals confusing wording, broken logic and unclear answer choices while they are still cheap to fix.
When should a survey use a Likert scale? When you want to measure agreement or frequency along a graded range, such as strongly disagree to strongly agree, so results can be averaged.

Questions from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages and get questions based on what you gave it.

Three question types

Multiple choice, true/false and open questions, each with an explanation so you can check the answer key quickly.

Export when you are ready

Free plans study in the browser. Plus adds PDF and DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML.

How it works

Upload your source

Add a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of a page. Plain text works too.

Choose question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false or open questions for your quiz or survey.

Review and copy into Google Forms

Check the questions and explanations, then paste them into your form.

Whether you are scoring a quiz or gathering opinions, the wording of each question decides the quality of your results. Avoid double-barreled questions that ask about two things at once, and avoid leading wording that hints at the answer you want. Mark questions as required only when you need every response, and test the form with a colleague before sending it to a full group.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a Google Forms survey have?

Most surveys work best with a small number of focused questions that respondents can finish in a few minutes. Cut any question whose answer you will not use.

What makes a good question for a Google Forms quiz?

A good question tests one idea from the material and has one clearly correct answer, with wrong choices that are plausible. A short explanation for each answer helps respondents learn from mistakes.

Can I export the questions to use in Google Forms?

Exports are paid features. Plus includes PDF and DOCX export that you can copy from into a Google Form, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML. The free plan studies in the browser without exports.

Does DeckOwl create the form for me?

No, DeckOwl generates the questions and explanations, and you add them to your own Google Form. Free plans include 5 generations a week and no credit card is needed to start.
