Make Canvas quiz questions from your notes, ready for Lockdown Browser
DeckOwl turns your PDFs, slides or notes into multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions with explanations. You lock the exam in Canvas; we build the question set.
Setting up the Canvas quiz and the lockdown step
Learning how to make a Canvas quiz with Lockdown Browser starts with a clear split: writing the questions is one job, and switching on the lock is another.
- DeckOwl creates the questions; Canvas and LockDown Browser control the locked exam.
- Require LockDown Browser in the Canvas quiz settings, then save before publishing.
- Test the quiz as a student inside the locked browser before the exam date.
- Check that your Canvas version accepts QTI imports before you rely on one.
Questions from your own material
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or a photo of a page. The questions come from what you actually taught.
Explanations for every answer
Each multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer question includes an explanation, so students learn from missed items.
Export for Canvas
The QTI 2.1 export on the Pro plan gives you a file to import into your course. Confirm your Canvas version accepts it first.
How it works
Generate the question set
Upload your lecture material and choose multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer questions.
Export and import
Download a QTI 2.1 file on Pro and import it into Canvas, or use PDF or DOCX on Plus for review copies.
Turn on LockDown Browser in Canvas
Open the quiz settings in Canvas, require Respondus LockDown Browser, then save before you publish.
DeckOwl handles the question side. It can generate multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions from slides, PDFs or notes, each with an explanation. The lock belongs to Canvas. LockDown Browser is usually provided by your school, and it is enabled in the quiz settings in Canvas, not in DeckOwl. Menu labels can change between Canvas versions, so check your institution's guide.
Before students sit the exam, take the quiz yourself in the locked browser. Confirm that the timer, the question order and submission all work, and set any extra time for accommodations before the quiz opens.

Frequently asked questions
Does LockDown Browser stop students from using other apps during a quiz?
Yes. While the quiz is running, LockDown Browser blocks switching to other applications and disables copying, pasting and printing. Your school normally installs it on student computers.
Can students with accommodations still take a LockDown Browser quiz?
Yes. Canvas lets you give individual students extra time, and the lockdown still applies to their attempt. Set accommodations before the quiz opens so timing is correct from the start.
Does DeckOwl set up the LockDown Browser requirement for me?
No. DeckOwl builds the question set and exports it, while the LockDown Browser requirement is set in your Canvas quiz settings.
Which DeckOwl export should I try first for Canvas?
The QTI 2.1 export, which is on the Pro plan, is the file to try for a Canvas import. PDF and DOCX exports, on the Plus plan, are useful for printing or reviewing the questions.
