How to practice indirect questions in English

Learners often struggle with indirect questions because the word order changes once the question sits inside a statement. 'Where is the station?' becomes 'Could you tell me where the station is?', and the verb moves after the subject. A quiz that asks you to rebuild these sentences shows the pattern faster than rereading a rule.

  • Put the subject before the verb inside the embedded question.
  • Drop do, does or did when the question is inside a statement.
  • Use a question mark only when the main sentence is a question.
  • Use if or whether when there is no question word.
Example indirect questions practice items
Rewrite as an indirect question: 'Where is the bathroom?'Could you tell me where the bathroom is? The verb follows the subject, as it does in a statement.
Choose the correct form: 'Do you know where the train ___?' (is / was)is. The tense follows the present time of the speaker, and the clause keeps statement word order.
Is 'I wonder if he is ready' a direct or indirect question?Indirect. 'If' introduces an embedded yes or no question, so the clause uses statement word order.
Correct the sentence: 'Can you tell me what time does the bus leave?'Can you tell me what time the bus leaves? The auxiliary does is removed because the embedded clause keeps statement order.
Rewrite as an indirect question: 'Why did she leave early?'Could you explain why she left early? The subject comes before the verb, and did changes to the past tense form left.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add your grammar handout, lecture slides or a photo of the page on indirect questions.

Generate a quiz

Choose multiple-choice, true/false or open questions and generate a set from the material you uploaded.

Practice and review

Answer the questions, read the explanations and repeat the items you missed until the word order feels automatic.

DeckOwl is a quiz tool, not a Blooket game. It turns the grammar material you already have into practice questions, so the examples match your course or textbook. Start with your own notes, then check the explanation after each answer to see which pattern you used.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a direct and an indirect question?

A direct question uses question word order, such as 'Where is the station?' An indirect question places that question inside a statement, such as 'Could you tell me where the station is?', and the clause uses statement word order.

Do I put a question mark after an indirect question?

Usually no, when the main sentence is a statement, as in 'I wonder if she is coming.' Use a question mark only when the whole sentence is a question, such as 'Do you know where she is?'

Can I export the quiz for a class?

Exports are a paid feature. The Plus plan includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and the Pro plan adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and you do not need a credit card to start.
