How to build a useful practice question set for the MCAT

Most MCAT prep comes down to working through MCAT practice questions drawn from the content you are actually reviewing, such as biochemistry lecture slides or a chemistry textbook chapter. Questions written from your own material test the exact facts you need to recall, not generic topics.

  • Generate sets by topic, such as amino acids, acid-base chemistry or enzyme kinetics.
  • Mix question types so you practice recognition and recall separately.
  • Read every explanation, including for questions you got right.
  • Rerun generation on the chapters you missed to build a targeted second set.
Example MCAT biology and chemistry practice questions
Which structure is the primary site of oxidative phosphorylation in eukaryotic cells? The inner mitochondrial membrane, where the electron transport chain and ATP synthase sit, so the matrix is not the answer.
In a titration of a weak acid with a strong base, what is the pH at the half-equivalence point? The pH equals the pKa, because [HA] equals [A-] and the log term in Henderson-Hasselbalch becomes zero.
Which amino acid is achiral because its alpha carbon carries two hydrogen atoms?Glycine, since its side chain is a single hydrogen, so the alpha carbon has no four distinct substituents.
True or false: at constant temperature and fixed amount of gas, pressure and volume are inversely proportional.True, this is Boyle's law, since PV stays constant when temperature and the number of moles are fixed.
True or false: in Michaelis-Menten kinetics, Km is the substrate concentration at which the reaction rate is half of Vmax.True, because at [S] equal to Km the velocity is Vmax divided by 2, and a lower Km indicates higher enzyme affinity for the substrate.

Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer

Pick the question format that fits the section you are drilling, from quick true/false checks to open short-answer prompts.

Explanations for every question

Each question comes with an explanation so you can see why the right answer is right and where your reasoning slipped.

Built from your own material

Questions come from the PDFs, slides, DOCX files, plain notes or photographed pages you upload, not a generic bank.

How it works

Upload your review material

Add a PDF, slide deck, DOCX file, text notes or a photo of a page. Text recognition reads photos.

Choose a question type

Select multiple choice, true/false or short answer, then generate a set from the material you chose.

Work through the set and review

Answer in your browser, read each explanation, and come back to the questions you missed.

A good set mixes formats. Multiple-choice questions train you to rule out distractors, true/false items catch misconceptions quickly, and short-answer prompts force you to explain a mechanism in your own words before you see the answer.

Read the explanation even when you answered correctly. The reasoning behind a right answer often reveals the concept you would need on a harder passage-based question.

Frequently asked questions

How many practice questions should I do in one MCAT study session?

Most students find that a focused set of 20 to 30 questions, reviewed carefully, does more than a long set answered quickly. Spend as much time on explanations as on the questions themselves.

Should I review explanations for questions I got right?

Yes. A correct answer can rest on a guess or a partial understanding, and the explanation will confirm or correct the reasoning behind it.

Is there a free plan, and can I export my questions?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, with no credit card needed to start. Exports are paid: PDF and DOCX export are on Plus, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are on Pro.

Does DeckOwl cost money to try?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card. Students can get 40% off Plus or Pro with a school email.
