How the GIFT syntax works and where it fits

Moodle's GIFT import reads plain text, so one misplaced brace or equals sign can reject a whole batch. The Moodle quiz gift format uses a double colon before an optional title, braces around the answer block, an equals sign for the correct option and a tilde for each wrong one.

  • Use an equals sign before the single correct option inside the braces.
  • Prefix each option you want to mark wrong with a tilde.
  • Put TRUE or FALSE inside braces for a true/false question.
  • Test a small import first so one formatting error does not block a full quiz.
Example Moodle GIFT format questions
Write a GIFT multiple choice question about the capital of France.::Capital::What is the capital of France? {=Paris ~Lyon ~Nice ~Marseille}. The equals sign marks the one correct option and each tilde marks a distractor.
GIFT true/false question: the Earth orbits the Sun.::Orbit::The Earth orbits the Sun.{TRUE}. TRUE is the correct answer, written inside braces with no option list needed.
GIFT short answer that accepts two spellings of the same city.Capital of Italy? {=Rome =Roma}. Each equals sign adds an accepted answer, so either spelling earns full credit.
GIFT numeric question: the year the Magna Carta was sealed. When was the Magna Carta sealed? {#1215}. A hash mark starts a numeric answer, and the value after it is the expected number.
GIFT answer with feedback shown when a student picks it.What is 2+2? {=4#Correct ~3#Check the addition}. Text after a hash mark appears as feedback on the matching option.

Questions from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages and get draft questions based on what is actually in them.

Multiple choice, true/false and short answer

Each question includes an explanation, so you can check the reasoning before you import anything into Moodle.

Moodle XML export on Pro

The Pro plan exports Moodle XML for import into your course question bank, alongside QTI 2.1 export.

How it works

Upload your source

Add a lecture PDF, slide deck, DOCX file or notes. Photos of printed pages are read with text recognition.

Generate and review questions

Choose question types and check each draft against your source, adjusting wording and distractors where needed.

Export or study

Pro users export Moodle XML for their course. Free plan users study the questions in the browser.

Writing these questions by hand is slow when a single lecture has dozens of testable points. DeckOwl reads your source material and drafts multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions with explanations, which you can edit before exporting.

Check every generated question against your original material before importing. Distractor quality matters more than syntax, because a weak wrong option teaches nothing even when the file imports cleanly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I mark the correct answer in GIFT format?

Place an equals sign before the correct option inside the braces, such as {=Paris ~Lyon ~Nice}. Each wrong option gets a tilde.

Does a GIFT question need a title?

The double-colon title is optional, but it helps you find questions later in the Moodle question bank. The answer block in braces is required.

Can I export generated questions to Moodle XML?

Moodle XML export is part of the Pro plan at $14.99/month. Free plan users study in the browser without exports.

Does it cost anything to start?

The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and needs no credit card. Plus is $99.90/year or $9.99/month for unlimited generations and PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV exports.
