Writing a Moodle GIFT quiz from your own material

Moodle's GIFT text format is a plain way to write quiz questions, and a Moodle GIFT quiz is much faster to build when the questions already come from your lecture material. Instead of typing each item by hand with the right syntax, you upload the slides or notes and let DeckOwl draft the questions with explanations.

  • Check every correct answer against the source before importing.
  • Keep wrong options similar in length and style to the right answer.
  • Give each question a clear name so the question bank stays searchable.
  • Test the imported quiz in a sandbox course before students see it.
Example Moodle GIFT question formats
Which GIFT symbol marks a correct answer in a multiple-choice question? The equals sign (=). It marks the correct option inside the braces, while the tilde (~) marks each incorrect option.
How do you write a true/false question in GIFT?Put {T} or {F} after the statement, such as The sun orbits the Earth. {F}. Moodle reads the single letter as the only accepted answer.
How do you make a short-answer question accept more than one correct response?Add a separate equals line for each accepted answer, such as {=Paris =paris}. Each line marked with an equals sign counts as correct.
Where does the question name go in a GIFT question?Between double colons before the question text, such as ::Organelles::Which organelle makes ATP? {=Mitochondrion ~Ribosome}. The name labels the question in the question bank.
How do you attach feedback to a GIFT answer?Add a hash sign and the comment after the option, such as {=Paris #Correct, it is the capital}. Moodle shows that comment to the student after they answer.

Questions from your own files

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, text or photos of pages and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions with explanations.

Moodle XML export

On Pro, export your questions as Moodle XML so they can be imported into your course question bank.

Free to start

Begin on the Free plan with 3 generations per month and study in the browser. No credit card needed.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, slide deck, text file or photo of a page from your course.

Choose question types

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or open questions and generate a set from your content.

Export for Moodle

On Pro, download Moodle XML and import the file into your Moodle question bank.

Every generated question still needs a quick check. Confirm the correct answer matches your source, make sure the wrong options are plausible, and then import the set into Moodle so students see it in the course.

Frequently asked questions

What does the GIFT format look like in Moodle?

Each question has a name between double colons, then the question text, then answers in braces. An equals sign marks a correct answer and a tilde marks a wrong one, as in ::Capital::What is the capital of France? {=Paris ~Lyon ~Marseille}.

How do I write wrong options that are not too easy to spot?

Use answers that a student could plausibly confuse with the correct one, and keep their length and wording close to the right answer. Avoid options like all of the above, since they give away the answer.

Which DeckOwl plan includes Moodle XML export?

Moodle XML export is included in the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. The Free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Do I need a paid plan to try it?

No. You can start on the Free plan with 3 generations per month, and no credit card is needed to begin. Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export for $39 per year or $7.99 per month.
