How Moodle quiz grading works

Good moodle quiz grading starts before any student opens the quiz. The grading method for repeat attempts, the maximum grade and any penalty for wrong answers all decide what a score means in the gradebook.

  • Highest attempt keeps the best score, so retakes can only raise the recorded grade.
  • Average grade weights every attempt equally, so early low scores pull the final grade down.
  • Maximum grade rescales the quiz total, so a 20-mark quiz can be recorded out of 10.
  • Penalties for wrong answers discourage random guessing in multiple-choice questions.
Example Moodle grading questions
In Moodle, which grading method keeps only the best score across multiple quiz attempts?Highest grade. It records the best attempt, so a retake can raise the grade but never lower it.
What does the maximum grade setting control in a Moodle quiz? The score the quiz is scaled to in the gradebook. It is separate from the sum of question marks, so it rescales the total.
What does average grade mean for multiple attempts in Moodle? Each attempt counts equally toward the final grade, so early low attempts reduce the average.
What is a penalty scheme for multiple-choice questions in Moodle?A deduction for each wrong try, which discourages random guessing because a wrong answer costs marks.
Why might a Moodle quiz show an attempt as needing grading? It contains manually graded questions, such as essays, that a teacher has not yet marked.

Questions with explanations

Get multiple-choice, true/false and open questions, each with an explanation students can read after answering.

Start from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages and build questions from the content you actually teach.

Moodle XML export

Export to Moodle XML on the Pro plan so questions import straight into your Moodle question bank.

How it works

Upload your notes or slides

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page. Images are read with text recognition.

Choose question types and count

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or open questions and how many you want to generate.

Review, then study or export

Check each question and explanation, then study in the browser or export if your plan includes it.

Start with the quiz settings: attempts allowed, the grading method (highest, average, first or last attempt) and the maximum grade. Then check each question's default mark, since a 20-mark quiz scaled to a maximum grade of 10 is recorded out of 10.

DeckOwl can help with the question side. Upload your material and get questions with explanations to place in your Moodle quiz, then review each one before students see it. Moodle XML export is included on the Pro plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sum of marks and maximum grade in Moodle?

Sum of marks is the total points the questions add up to, while maximum grade is the score the quiz is scaled to in the gradebook. Changing the maximum grade rescales every attempt in proportion.

How many questions should a short Moodle quiz have?

There is no fixed rule, but a common approach is to cover each learning objective at least once. Match the number of questions to the time you allow students to finish.

Does DeckOwl grade quiz attempts in Moodle?

No. DeckOwl generates questions with explanations and can export them, but grading still happens in Moodle according to the settings you choose.

Which plan includes Moodle XML export?

Moodle XML export is included in the Pro plan at $14.99 per month, which also includes QTI 2.1 export and a stronger AI model. Students with a school email get 40% off.
