How to pace yourself on timed SAT practice

Pacing is the part of your SAT practice test time that most students underestimate. On the Digital SAT, each Reading and Writing module gives 32 minutes for 27 questions and each Math module gives 35 minutes for 22 questions, so the averages are roughly 71 and 95 seconds per question.

  • Use module-level limits, not the whole test total, when you plan a practice session.
  • Time one module at a time before attempting back-to-back sets.
  • Mark questions you guessed on and review them after the timer stops.
  • Review explanations for missed items to find the content gaps behind slow answers.
Example SAT timing practice questions
How long is each Digital SAT Reading and Writing module?32 minutes for 27 questions, which averages about 71 seconds per question.
How long is each Digital SAT Math module?35 minutes for 22 questions, which averages about 95 seconds per question.
Why practice with a timer instead of untimed?A timer reveals pacing gaps, since each module ends when time runs out regardless of how many questions you finished.
Is there a penalty for a wrong answer on the Digital SAT?No. Wrong answers do not lose points, so answer every question, including a quick guess on one you are running out of time for.
How many minutes of timed testing does the Digital SAT include across Reading and Writing and Math?About 134 minutes in total, with 64 minutes for Reading and Writing and 70 minutes for Math, not counting the break.

Your own material

Upload PDFs, slides, DOCX files, plain notes or photos of pages and get multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer questions with explanations.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with an explanation, so a wrong answer on a timed set teaches you something you can use on test day.

Export when you need it

The free plan studies in the browser. Plus adds PDF and DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for school platforms.

How it works

Set your module limits

Write down the time for the section you are practicing, such as 32 minutes for a Reading and Writing module.

Upload your study material

Add the notes, slides or PDF you want tested, from class or from your own prep.

Practice against the clock

Work through the generated questions with a timer and mark any you had to guess on.

Full-length practice tests are useful, but they are fixed, and their questions may not match what your class has covered. A quiz built from your own notes lets you rehearse the same timing on content you actually need to review, then check each explanation when you miss an answer.

Start with untimed sets to learn the material, then move to timed sets once your accuracy is steady. Track how many questions you finish before the timer ends, and skip and return to hard items rather than spending a minute stuck on one.
