How a custom practice test helps with SAT writing

Students preparing for the reading and writing section often find that a SAT writing practice test built from their own course notes is more useful than a generic set, because the rules they keep missing are the ones their notes already cover.

  • Generate questions from the rules you find hardest, such as semicolons or modifiers.
  • Use explanations to check why a choice is wrong, not only which one is right.
  • Retake missed questions after a few days to test whether the rule has stuck.
  • Export to PDF or DOCX on Plus if you want a printable copy for a study group.
Example SAT Writing practice questions
Choose the verb that agrees with the subject: "The collection of rare coins ___ on display this week." (A) is (B) are(A) is. The subject is "collection," which is singular, so the verb must be singular.
Which punctuation correctly joins these two independent clauses: "The test was long ___ most students finished on time"?A semicolon. Two independent clauses joined without a coordinating conjunction need a semicolon or a period, not a comma.
Which revision fixes the dangling modifier in "Walking to school, the bridge was crossed by Maya"?"Walking to school, Maya crossed the bridge." The modifier must describe the person doing the action, so that person must be the subject.
Which transition fits: "The first draft was rushed; ___, the final version is carefully edited."However. It signals contrast between the rushed draft and the careful final version, while "therefore" would falsely imply cause.
Which option is most concise: "due to the fact that," "because," or "owing to the reason that"?"Because." It says the same thing in fewer words, and the SAT favors the tighter option when meaning is unchanged.

Built from your material

Questions come from the notes and handouts you already use, so practice matches what you are studying.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes a reason the correct choice works, which helps you learn the rule behind it.

Spaced review

Missed items can return on a schedule so comma, verb and transition rules stick before test day.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or a photo of a page. Photos are read with text recognition.

Choose a question type

Pick multiple choice, true/false or short answer questions, then generate the practice set.

Take it and review

Answer the questions, read the explanations and redo the ones you missed.

Writing questions usually test conventions like punctuation, subject-verb agreement and pronoun use, along with expression of ideas such as transitions and concision. Practicing with a mix of these types, and reading the reason behind each answer, builds the judgment the real section requires.

Frequently asked questions

What SAT writing topics should a practice test cover?

Most practice work covers Standard English conventions such as punctuation, verb agreement and pronouns, plus expression of ideas like transitions and concision. Match your set to the topics your teacher or prep book emphasizes.

How often should I take practice tests before the SAT?

Spreading practice over several weeks works better than one long cram session. Reviewing each explanation usually helps more than focusing on the raw score.

Can I export a practice test for free?

The free plan lets you study in the browser, but exports are paid features. PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export are on Plus, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are on Pro.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, which includes 3 generations per month.
