Preparing a Year 6 pupil for the SATs

Year 6 pupils in England sit their SATs in May, and a good SATs practice test shows where understanding is solid and where it is shaky. Most of the marks come from reading, maths and grammar, punctuation and spelling, so practice needs to cover all three, not just the subject that feels hardest.

  • Choose a subject, such as reading, maths or grammar, punctuation and spelling, and keep each session focused on one area.
  • Upload past paper PDFs or class notes so the questions reflect the wording and topics your pupil will meet.
  • Read the explanation after each wrong answer and say the rule aloud before moving on.
  • Repeat missed questions after a few days to see which topics need another pass before the tests.
Example Year 6 SATs practice questions
What is 3/4 of 20?15. Find a quarter of 20 (5) and multiply it by 3.
Which word is a conjunction in: "She wanted to go, but it was raining."but. It joins two clauses, and conjunctions join clauses or words.
True or false: a fronted adverbial is followed by a comma.True. For example, "After lunch, we walked to the park." The comma separates the opening phrase from the main clause.
What is the plural of "child"?children. It is an irregular plural, so it does not add -s.
In "She was reluctant to leave the party," what does "reluctant" mean?Unwilling or hesitant. The sentence describes someone who does not want to go, so the surrounding words give the meaning.

Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer

Choose the question format that fits the paper you are preparing for, and mix formats within one practice set.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with a short explanation, so a wrong answer shows the method or rule that was missed.

Built from your own material

Questions come from the notes, slides or PDFs you upload, so the practice follows what your class has actually covered.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, Word file, PowerPoint, plain text notes or a photo of a page.

Pick a subject and format

Choose multiple-choice, true/false or short answer, and set how many questions you want.

Practice and review

Work through the set, then read the explanation for each question you got wrong before the next session.

Generating a custom paper from your own notes works well because the questions match the topics your teacher has already taught. Ready-made papers from other sources are useful too, but a set built from your class material focuses on what was actually covered this year.

Short, regular sessions in the weeks before the tests usually help more than one long paper. Review the explanations after each set, then return to the questions you missed a few days later to check they have stuck.

Frequently asked questions

How many practice questions should a Year 6 pupil do before the SATs?

There is no official number, but short sessions of around 15 to 20 minutes, several times a week, usually work better than one long paper. Mixing questions from each subject across the weeks before May helps earlier topics stay fresh.

Which subjects do the Year 6 SATs in England cover?

The tests cover reading, maths, and grammar, punctuation and spelling, with a separate spelling test. Uploading the matching notes or past paper PDFs lets you build a practice set for one subject at a time.

Can I export my SATs practice questions?

Exporting is a paid feature. The Plus plan adds PDF and DOCX export so you can print a paper, and the Pro plan adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML.

Is there a free plan to try it first?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and you do not need a credit card to start.
