Why quizzing beats rereading your notes

Rereading your notes feels productive, but study notes to quiz practice is what exposes the gaps. When you turn a chapter into questions and answer them from memory, the weak spots show up before the exam does.

  • Test recall from memory instead of recognizing text you have already read
  • Mix multiple choice, true/false, and short answer to catch different kinds of gaps
  • Read the explanation after every answer, right or wrong
  • Retake the same set after a few days to see what you still remember
Example American Civil War quiz questions
Which Union general commanded the Army of the Potomac when it defeated Lee at Gettysburg in July 1863?George G. Meade. Lee's defeat ended his invasion of the North and is often treated as the war's turning point.
True or false: the Emancipation Proclamation freed all enslaved people in the United States when it took effect on January 1, 1863.False. It applied to states in rebellion and did not cover border states or areas already under Union control, so the 13th Amendment was needed in 1865.
What was the goal of the Union's Anaconda Plan?To blockade Southern ports and control the Mississippi River, cutting the Confederacy in two and squeezing its economy.
Which battle fought in Maryland on September 17, 1862 was the bloodiest single day in American history? The Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg). Lincoln used the Union victory there to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.
What did the Homestead Act of 1862 offer to settlers?Up to 160 acres of public land after they lived on it and improved it for five years. It encouraged westward settlement during the war.

Questions from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain text, or photos of pages. Your quiz comes from what you actually studied.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with a short explanation, so a wrong answer teaches you why instead of just marking it wrong.

Three question types

Choose multiple choice, true/false, or short answer, or mix them in one quiz to test recognition and recall.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slides, a document, or a photo of your handwritten pages. No credit card is needed to start.

Pick the question types

Select multiple choice, true/false, or short answer, and how many questions you want to work through.

Review and study

Edit anything vague, then answer the quiz and read the explanations. Study the questions you missed again.

DeckOwl reads your uploaded PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text, or photos of pages, then drafts questions with an answer key and an explanation for each one. You review the set, cut anything unclear, and study again until the answers come easily.

Frequently asked questions

How many quiz questions should I write from one chapter of notes?

Aim for roughly one question per key date, cause, person, or term in the chapter. Short answer questions are especially useful because they require recalling the idea rather than picking it from a list.

Is it better to quiz myself than to reread my Civil War notes?

Pulling an answer from memory, which is called retrieval practice, generally builds recall more reliably than rereading. Rereading still helps as a first pass, but quizzing shows you what you can actually reproduce.

Can I export the quiz to Moodle or QTI?

QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are part of the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. PDF, DOCX, Anki, and CSV export are included in Plus at $39 per year or $7.99 per month.

Is there a free plan?

The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, but exports are not included. Students get 40% off a paid plan with a school email.
