Write video-based quiz questions from your lecture notes
Paste a transcript or upload your slides, PDFs or notes, and DeckOwl writes multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions with explanations.
Why video lessons need a text version first
Most lecture recordings sit unused after the semester ends, so a student who wants video-based quiz questions usually has to write them by hand. DeckOwl does not read video files, but it does read the text that comes out of one.
- Caption or transcript text from a lecture recording
- Slide decks exported as PPTX or PDF
- Typed notes from a class you watched online
- Photos of printed handouts, read with text recognition
Works from what you have
Accepts PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text and photos of pages. Paste a video transcript as plain text.
Three question types
Multiple choice, true/false and short answer, each with an explanation of why the correct answer is right.
Study in the browser
The free plan includes 3 generations a month. Anki and CSV export are on Plus, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are on Pro.
How it works
Get the transcript
Copy the captions or transcript from your video, or type out the key points from the lecture.
Upload or paste
Add the text as plain notes, or upload slides, PDFs or DOCX files that go with the lesson.
Review and study
Check each question and explanation, then study in the browser or export on a paid plan.
Paste a transcript, slides or your own typed notes, and the generator writes questions with an explanation for each answer. Review them before you study, because automatic transcripts can mishear technical terms and fast speakers.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions should I write from a 50-minute lecture?
Most people find 15 to 25 questions enough to cover the main ideas. Spread them across the whole lecture so you are not quizzed only on the opening minutes.
What makes a good question for a video lesson?
Ask about a claim the speaker made, a cause and effect relationship, or a step in a process rather than a word said once. Then check the explanation against the recording.
Can DeckOwl read a video file directly?
No. Use the captions or a transcript as plain text, or upload the slides or notes the lecture used.
Which export options are included?
The free plan studies in the browser with no exports. Plus adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML.
